My R/T is consistently getting 17-18 city and 24-25 highway. That’s with the occasional burn out and my lead foot.

I'm really not testing the limits very much. I just live in a very small town and most of my destinations are within two miles or less. That is the majority of my driving with an occasional fifteen to thirty mile trip throwed in. Believe me, I go out of my way to drive this thing as much as possible because it is so much fun. I now have 2030 miles on it since September 4th. The short trips just kills the gas mileage but I don't care. My satisfaction and the looks and reaction that the car receives is still incredible.

I refilled the tank completely for the first time last night. The result: 303.4 miles driven, 16.256 gallons. ALL of it was in-town driving. According to my handy Microsoft calculator, that's 18.6 mpg. Not bad for a car with 670 miles on it.

Well I'm pleased to hear about all of the other folks getting good mileage also. I realy think I get screwed with this "gas guzzler" tax. This is my best mileage vehicle.

I only have 500 miles on my SRT, and have only done one highway trip that was 153 miles long. The 6.1 used 6.5 gallons of gas to go those 153 miles, which by my math equals 23.5 mpg. The onboard computer said my average fuel economy was 22.4 mpg. I am happy with the fuel mileage the SRT is getting so far.

About the onboard computers, My 04 Ram 1500 with 5.7 hemi has always been optimistic about 1 MPG. But that's close enough to give you an idea how you are doing. The Challenger gets better gas mileage than the truck in all conditions but the truck does have 3.92 gearing as opposed to the cars 3.06.
A few points. The truck and the Challenger have different transmissions with different gearing. The Ram does have a 3.92 axle ratio; however, the truck's transmission is geared more for fuel economy. The 545RFE has a 5th gear ratio of .67; meanwhile, the W5A580 used in the LX cars such as the Challenger has a 5th gear ratio of .83. So basically to provide a more accurate comparison, the 3.06 axle ratio with that transmission is approximately 3.79 gears with the gearing of a 545RFE transmission so the difference between your truck and the Challenger's transmission is a difference of .13, which isn't a very large difference.

The funny thing is I've noticed since the beginning that the 6.1L is far more fuel efficient than the numbers suggest. In some old Road & Track issues, they were getting better real world results with the SRT LX models than they were with the GM W-body models such as the Grand Prix GXP, Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS in real world results and the SRTs were rated under the older fuel economy standards at 20mpg and the GM models were rated for 27-28mpg, and those W-body models all had Active Fuel Management (same thing as MDS), fuel economy focused gearing, were all lighter and probably more aerodynamic, and had the smaller displacement of 5.3L. The Hemis seem to be quite an impressive engine when it comes to fuel economy when you take into account what they are.

Roswell, that is 1.6 mpg better than the EPA rating is for the city. That is actually quite impressive. Those 3.5Ls are efficient engines. I have been able to get over 30 mpg many times with my Intrepids.

I have found those computers to be off. Chrysler ones seem to be close. The one in my father's Taurus is way off and not in the direction one would prefer it to be, and considering how low the numbers are on there, that isn't encouraging.

I try to keep my tank above the half way mark so then I don't develop a bad habit of not paying attention and running out. My father has the bad habit of running out. He did that on the way home on the night AFTER I was born. Fortunately, the only people with him were my brother and my Grandmother. He has ran out of gas several other times, but that was the most memorable one, especially since my Grandmother has it in her achieves of the stories she has written in the newspaper. It was quite an amusing story in what she wrote and the parts that I knew she probably had to cut out (the part where he kicked the car saying "oh what's wrong now with this stupid thing." and it getting progressively more colorful afterwards). He unfortunately hasn't learned since I had to fill up the extra vehicle yesterday he drives sometimes and it took more gas to fill it up than what my brother said it had for its capacity and he drove it for six years straight.

My 08 SRT does very well on gas. I have seen nothing below 16mpg and as high as 22.5. I am not able to resist the pedal on the right. The smile is worth as bit of gas.

This whole EPA rating thing really blows. It seems like most folks have to try to get the crappy fuel mileage that EPA estimates. Is there some kind of bias here? Maybe those Toyota-lovin Consumer Reports do all of the tests and give the hem a bad name.....

Thanks RLSH700 for the information about the overdrive transmissions and how they can effect final drive ratios. But, I'm an old timer and in my drag racing days you just changed rear gears and knew what would happen. Could you show me the math you used to figure out that final ratio for the Challenger? If the overdrive changed the Challenger's final ratio then the Truck's ratio should have changed too. What would its final drive ratio be? Please show the math for that too. Maybe I can learn something here.
