Wondering what future value might be?
 

Hey everyone just joined site.Well i am a dodge guy have been since 96.My main question is what does everyone think the future value of a challenger might be?I am only talking the srt8 and the rt.Reason i ask is i am going to get one in the spring and was basically gone just use it on the weekends so low miles on it.I know it is pretty hard to determine it about production numbers and everything but would it be a good investment?Let's say it was 31,000 would you think in say 20 years would it be worth 31,000 low miles mint shape?Or would it be a 5,000 dollar car?Not that i would sell it (unless the price is right lol)But to give to my kids down the road.And also what would be the best options to get like say auto vs.stick/trac pac etc.My dealer told me to order one in january then i would get it by say march.So let me know info you guys might know on production or what you think the car might be worth down the road.thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I think its pretty much been the consensus on this site, that this car will probably not hold its value all that well. If you are buying the car for an investment, you are most likely in for a very, very long wait. Who knows what the future may bring though. This could very well be the last huzzah for the muscle cars. And the fact that this is one of the last may help the value some in the long run. Or Dodge could go out of business tomorrow, making this their last great design. Either way, you are looking at at least 25-30 years before you break even on your investment.

As for me, and pretty much the rest of the people in this forum. We are buying the car for other reasons. Some for the great looks, others for the attention it attracts, maybe a sense of nostalgia and heritage, or even the thrill of laying down rubber the entire length of a city block (looking at you Andre). But the majority of us are in it for the car. Not the money we may or may not make if we ever decide to sell it. And face it, modern cars just dont last long enough to become collectors items anyway. They are designed to wear out forcing you to buy new cars, or expensive repair parts to keep them running. So, unless upon picking up your car you drain all your fluids, and seal it in an airtight, humidity controlled bubble, and sit on it for 30 years, the car is going to eventually fall apart on you.

Why not just enjoy it while it lasts?

I just cringe when I see the word "investment" when used on most modern cars. Some very limited production cars such as the new ZR1 Vette, Ferrari's and such might fare OK, but the new Challenger is just made in numbers too large to qualify for investment grade. . Twenty years from now, $40K invested in a 70 Challenger will have done better than a current one. The original ones are doing well because us Boomers had one back in the day. They were more affordable to the young than an SRT is now. There was a huge cult following of drag racers and Trans Am racing that kept everyone bench racing the cars, and you could buy on Monday what you saw racing on Monday. That's the stuff that creates legends. Because of that, the demand just won't be as large.

Secondly, there's a sizable replacement parts industry available which make restoration easy. The current generation of cars will require an EE degree to keep running.

The only thing that I can see that would help the current cars is a combination of Chrysler folding and gas prices getting so high that following cars do not eclipse it in performance. Relative to other new generationChallengers, the SRT's will be worth more though.

Just my opinion.

Guy I know thought I was buying as investment and brought me list of cars to buy.
I assured him it was for mid life crisis lol. I have info at work and I could post if you like.
A old Cuda or Challenger can be had for 40k and will go up in value.
This car is too fun to sit in garage, warehouse or living room with cover.

Buy the car... use it as you see fit.
If there is a windfall somewhere down the road... bonus.
If not... and you didnt enjoy it while you could... bummer for you.
As for counting on a car as an investment... its just a crapshoot.

Now if you consider The Grin as a good return on your investment... youll do well!

You can buy an old Challenger right now for less than $10K and it is 35 years old.

Buying a muscle car makes for a very poor investment with no guarantees.

Put away $100 every month in some good mutual funds and you will have a sizable amount in 35 years. Of course, that is assuming
you are still alive in 35 years. That poor dealer that got killed in his Challenger was just 30 years old.

Bottom line: Enjoy your Challenger and thank God that he allowed you to have one.

If I would be able to know the value of a challenger in 35 years,
I would know the lucky lotto numbers for the next drawing next week.......
Nobody will know whats the value of anything in 35 years....

This new Challenger is a great value and is sure to be a classic. As far as collectible car values, the rule of thumb has always been whatever was popular when it was new will find a future market. The high end cars will be the first to get grabbed up by collectors. While the future is hard to predict it a fair bet that the new Challenger SRT8 will be sought after by future generations of car collectors. Provided there aren’t any major issues with car, poor quality will kill the value faster than anything else.
