with my dad, i am building a 1974 challenger with a 340 and a 904 tranny with a 5000 stahl converter. the tranny has all billet internals. my question is with that torque converter, will the car be too much for the street?

What are your plans for the car? Do you want a street friendly car that you can take to the strip, or more of a drag car with some street time?

I would say that 5K stall is way to big for any street use, unless its to get to to and from the track. I would chose between a 2500-3500 depending on what your plans are. Maybe someone that has a Auto can jump in as well and offer a little more advice.

I agree with jdb840, too much for the street. What you want to do with a stall converter is to put the engine at the ideal power spot when you release the trans brake. Or if your foot braking it you want to take it up to about 500 rpms less than your stall and flash the converter. 5000 would be for a track only. Stop and go traffic would be murder. If you plan on streeting it, then I would opt for a 2800 -3500. I use a 2800 stall on the street and its just right for what I need. What rpm does the 340 red line at? Mine is set for 6000. If I had a 5000 stall I would not get much out of 1st gear. So it depends on what its use will be.

the car will be a street car that i take to the strip occaisionally. i have a chrome box in the car (8000 RPM). i do have another converter that is a 3500 stahl.

your convertor should be matched to your cam and rear gears. you'll cook the trans with a 5000 on the street.

how modified is the motor??

the cam is a lunati voodoo 552 lift. the rear end is a 456

I would go with a 3500 for street driving.

from what im hearing, this car is going to be miserable for street use. im running a 4.56 spool with a 3500 stall, and even that is a bit much, but for track use, it is excellent. im running a built 727 with the stock gear set...many of the 904s have a lower gear set, which will make your first gear even worse.

with a 5000 stall (which im going to guess is an 8 or 9 inch convertor?), the car is going to get AWFUL mileage, and with that much stall, the trans is going to run very hot. the more heat that you put into the trans, the less life youre going to get out of it. im running in the low 12s, trapping in the 108 range with a 3500 stall and 4.56 gears, and in the quarter, im around 6700rpm coming through the top end.

the 5000 rpm TC is not really made for street use, and i would NOT recommend it.

if youre racing and cruising a car, with an emphasis on cruising (80% cruising, 20% racing), a nice stall is around 2800-3200. my 3500 is a bit much, but you get used to it...also, for cruising, i would not go with a 4.56 rear, unless i was running an overdrive transmission. 4.30 is the biggest that i would deal with, especially if youre going to be on the highway at all...my 4.10s were really nice for cruising.
