Default You gas gauge's secret

Interesting bit of Tidbit on your gas gauge.

One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dash that was staring me right in the face the whole time.

I didn't and I bet you probably haven't either.

Quick question, what side of your car is your gas tank?

If you are anything like me, you probably can't remember right away.

My solution is to uncomfortably stick my head out the window, strain my neck and look.

If you don't do this in your own car you definitely have done it in a borrowed or rental car.

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like

Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury.

If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump.

The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump.

If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left.

If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo below).

It is that simple!

I don't know how you feel right now but when I found out this morning I felt cheated!

Why don't the dealers share such important information with car buyers?

I don't understand why this isn't in the drivers manual?

I don't get why any mechanic I have ever been too or know has even thought of mentioning this to me?

The only possible explanation can be that all these people probably don't even know!

Go out and share the worlds best kept auto secret with your friends as this is information is way too important to be kept secret.

Hold on a minuet, that gas gauge on the right looks like its from a mid-90s Olds Ciera and I can tell you for a fact it had the tank on the left side.

Maybe that is why the instructions are not in the manual.

Correction, I was half correct. That specific gauge may not be from a Cutlass Ciera, but nonetheless the proof is right here.
Look above the gas gauge. You have to admit they look almost identical. Defendately GM either way. The other one for the record is most likely from a Mitsubishi. Look closely at the picture of the driver (left side) and you will see the door cover for the gas tank.

I wasn't addressing the factual accuracy.

I thought you were pretending to indicate you had the car knowledge to identify a car just by the gas gauge instrumentation. You know like someone having a picture of a Distributor Cap, and you saying without seeing anything else. "That looks like a 77 mid year Granada coupe with a 302" or some sort of "profiler like" preternatural ability to deduce crime scenes by a scant amount of evidence.

I will defer though, the two gauges look very similar.

Very cool article. The things one doesn't know that one doesn't know. I love this type of stuff.

I still miss the "good old days" of the gas filler neck in the rear of the car behind the license plate, like my 78 Firebird Formula has. That way it doesn't matter which side of the pump I fill up on.

Yeah, that was a cool feature. Just fell out of fad, or do ya think it was either safety related or too costly to produce.

How about the 56-57 Chevy Belairs. Do you know where their gas filler is? Give us an unusual place that cars have gas fillers.
