You gents are forgetting all of the other "bonuses" with the SRT8, not just the 6.1L.
Add in better steering, suspension, the Brembo brakes, more "standard equipment" (upgrades over the R/T)...
The list of differences is quite long. I thought about getting an R/T and modding it. But by the time I,m done just trying to get it equal to the SRT8, I,d have spent more money on just the suspension and appearance.
Did anyone also consider resale value in say 35 or so years? The SRT is today,s R/T of 35 years ago. That was the clincher for me.
If its gonna be my last new car, its gonna be the top dog in the kennel.

for me the srt is the answer i also have a 06 charger se that is a great everyday car and we have driven the crap out of it with no and i mean 0 problems it is one of the best vehicles i ever bought but i ordered no. 955 with the sole intention of it being my summer saturday night fun car. so if i was in the market i would say the s/e version of the challenger will probably be an great daily driver and every bit as fun as the pony car they are supposed to be. no matter what version you can afford they are a blast to drive whether its every day or saturday night get one and enjoy

if your lookin for a bone performance vehicle bargain the rt is the car....now if leather navi having a few more ponies from the factory than the srt is the package...but modding wise the 5.7 is a steal....srt u get wat u pay for....u get the full package.
if i were lookin for modding id go with 5.7 no options like sunroof my gig ect ect.

No - in my opinion. Save your money, avoid the gas guzzler tax and buy the R/T. It will still kick ass and you'll save many thousands.

For those of us who don't want to make a lot of upgrades to a vehicle the SRT is great. It has the good brakes, exhaust, SRT setup, etc. And there is that collectible factor. But if I had the time to spend in the shop I would really enjoy upgrading the RT. They (whoever they are) say that the new 5.7 hemi is a world class motor that may overtake the 6.1. All in all the Mopar engines have a lot of headroom to get killer performance if you can affod the gas...

I'm wondering what a supercharger goes for, and I also feel that if the dealership installs it, it is covered under warranty. A 5.7 supercharged R/T should leave the 6.1 behind.

HP to weight ratio:
Can anyone guess what Mopar mill has the best HP to weight ratio in all of Dodges history? This is a "from the factory number".
The 6.1L places first over the older BB Mopars, but the second place was a shocker. It's the 3.5L being placed in the SE's
My first guess would have been the 426, or a HP 440. I was not even close.
