Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

We are developing a functional ram air hood for the 2008 Challenger in a shaker hood style. We have a prototype now and would like to start production in 6 to 8 weeks. Let me know what you like or dislike about the attached photos.

Cool. Are you using fiberglass or fiber carbon?

Looks good from what I could see. Only the last 2 pictures are viewable. Is it metal?

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Fiberglass with steel internal components at all attachement points so that this is a true bolt on replacement.

Haha....(evil grin) It looks awsome... man that's what i've been waiting to see... it might look a little better though if the hood was more flush when it comes to the Shaker... but it really does look like what I want at least, I mean I would pay for it, hands down...

I think it looks good but it is missing that black lining around the shaker just like on the chargers of new with shakers. It is missing that space around the shaker, ill post pics when I can. Also if the hood was completely flat would be great.

Looking good. Just curious on the "functionality" part of it. Will/can you plumb it into the air box???

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

instead of raising the hood scope, lower the height of the "bevel" on the hood by @1/4 inch which will give the appearance of raising the scope. As it stands, it is very good looking and with a few minor tweaks you will have many a buyer !

Looks good are you going to make a shaker decal for under the hood?

Hell yeah, just what I have been waiting for!

Looks good.

I hope you guys also look at producing a factory looking hood that just has exaggerated "bulge area" for the larger, functional air scoops...say another 3/4 inch higher and make corresponding underhood ducting to make it functional to stock air box. That is what I would want. Plus, as others have mentioned on this forum, you'd then be able to better see the raised scoop area from inside the car, just like the original Challengers.

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

I would like to see it more the size of the orignal found on the 70/71 Challenger as they look better than the new Charger type....The hood is so big, that anything smaller starts to look toy like. I know of a shop doing just that......looks very nice. Just my two cents...........good luck on your project

well... I actually ordered one but want to see the pic anyway.

For me this is one of my favorites. Shaker hoods were cool in their day but engines are so smooth that they don't shake anymore.

This one looks like a solid one piece hood/scoop and it better be functional. I don't gadgets just for looks.......they better enhance performance, otherwise it is a fake hypocrite car. :D

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Ummmmm.... please except a comment from someone who was actually around when the original Shaker Fresh Air Hood shook, but....that puppy was a glorified air cleaner, and sat on top of the, ready for it, carburetors! What exactly is this shaker thingy attached to? The airbox? That's at the forward right corner of the engine compartment, and it's also gone on mine and many other SRT8s, replaced by CAI. And what exactly is it doing? Are you building it as a type of CAI linkage to the throttle body, because, if you are, plunking it directly over that piping hot Intake manifold is not the best place to put an unrestricted delivery system of cold air. And finally, exactly what is going to shake the Shaker? I assume you are aware that the 70s Shakers shook because of how poorly built the cars were back then. They were atop 350+hp, 470 lb/ft cast-iron torque wrenches that were trying their best to tear a car apart. My 6.1 Hemi barely vibrates even at hi revs. And the 5.7 Hemi, totally hidden under a black shroud, seems even more secure on it's mounts than its big brother.

Not really sure what a Shaker is for nowadays, lads. Are you going to sell it with a 8- track with it?

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Well... I never did hear them quote that it was a "functional" shaker hood. Maybe they could motorize it somehow to give it an authentic shaker hood shake... :D

I think I kinda like your outspoken style VidLit... ;)

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Love the "motorized" concept! LOL!

Not looking to start fires, but as you said, it may be a bit hypocritical.

sorry, that was Jeremiah 29:11's quote.

Ahhh... thanks for the clarification... I didnt remember calling anyone a hypocrite... besides, that would probably be hypocritical of me... [8D]

shaker hood look good....that is why people get them nowadays....if they didnt look so badass then no one would get them functional or not.

If it is not functional then it would be just a hood scoop because it doesn't have the shakes. :D

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Trust me I am all for real shaker...... I am just explaining why some people get it anyway.:)

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

I would like one just because of it's looks, not really concerned that it doesn't "shake". They just look cool.

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

Its a nice way to make the car your own, but its like "hood candy". I see a shaker and wonder why on todays cars.

I know, it looks cool.....

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

So the shaker looks cool on 08-09 Challengers, is anyone going to get a vnyl top??[&:]

Jeremiah 29:11 09-29-2008 09:46 AM

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

No vinyl top for me, it just adds too much work on the maintenenance and then you have to worry about the potential rust. You can see I took good care of mine in my avatar Challenger. The vinyl was always shiny.

As for a shaker hood, for me it has too look good but also be a performance enhancer. As an example, I just don't like Mustangs with the hood scoop
that don't even have an opening in the front. They are masquerading as something they are not. But that is just me. Some people like this stuff for looks only and that is not me. If you are going to put something that looks like a performance enhancer then it better be a performance enhancer like a hood scoop. It better be scooping.

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

just looking cool, that's all that matters...okay, so form over function, is it? If that's the case, why not something less obviously artificial than a shaker hood? Ever see the hood of the new ZR-1 or any number of Ferraris; why not the clear bubble over the engine. It's incredibly cool, and has no intentional function other than to "look cool".

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

From the two pics. It looks like there is a lot of curvature far from the shaker unit. Makes it a little odd. Could only be the angle of the pics though. Otherwise, it looks good ( might be better on a different color also ). You should also test for HP and make sure that there is no drop ( dont expect a rise ) in HP. Other than this, three questions come to my mind :
[ul][*] Is the unit connected to the hood or the engine and allowed to shake with the engine ? The shaking seems like a must to me.[*] Is the air connected to the manifold cooling vents or the actual engine ? What does the filter look like ? The later makes this sellable in larger volumes as it is arguably more functional than the stock unit.[*] Is the fiberglass/metal combo lighter or heavier than the stock aluminum hood and by how much ?
[/ul]

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

For any vinyl-look lover which do not really want the maintenance of vinyl, there is a way to make false vinyl from paint. I already saw that in a paintshop where I worked. You need to use a tick primer and a special gun. It can then be painted over any color you want. It really looks exactly like vinyl even from very close but it is paint so it is hard, shiny and easy to maintain. It used to be done to replace vinyl roofs in the 70s. Thought I'd throw it out there...

What is the status of this shaker setup?

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

It is not hard to make the Shaker functional. Ford did for the 2003 Mach 1 Mustang. I have that identical set up on my'01 Bullitt. Works well & shakes too:D

RE: Shaker Hood Opinions Wanted!

I love that Ford did that on the 03 04 Mach 1's-Killer Mustangs!
