440 or 426?

Late 60's, early 70's. The 426 Hemi or the 440? Yes, I will probably be the underdog here, but I prefer the 440. I want to spend more time driving and less time tweaking. The 426 Hemi needed to be tweaked regularly to keep it running at it's best. I'd rather set it and forget it.

RE: 440 or 426?

I would on one hand like a HEMI. But the 440 is so much cheaper. Less tuning needed. And all the HEMI stuff is so hard to find.

I have to go with the 440. More bang for the buck. And for me cost is always a factor.

RE: 440 or 426?

They both have their good and bad points. Owning a car with each, my observations are:
- Cant' beat the Hemi for 'ooh & ahh' appeal
- Anything Hemi related is EXPENSIVE.....
- 440s can be built to be competitive with the Hemi for less $$$
- 440s are easier to keep in tune
- Nothing beats the sound of a Hemi under WOT with all 8 barrels open!!:D

RE: 440 or 426?

anyone can go fast in a big block...;)

chrysler only made one engine that was never altered for emissions or "better" street use...the mighty 340...:)

i know that its not pretty, but its putting down around 360 to the wheels...

but in all fairness, TeewJay is right...i was at the detroit custom car show last weekend, and im not sure if there were more than 5% of the mopars that had wedge engines...everyone wants a hemi...

hell, i want a hemi...:D

but there isnt much that you can do with a 440 that you cant do with a hemi...and in either case, a ton of money

dodgebrothers 03-17-2006 08:20 PM

RE: 440 or 426?

Having experience with both as well, the hemi is less impressive off the line but comes on like nothing else...period.

The 440 is an excellent torque monster and even better w/ 6pak set up.

Besides tuning the hemi, solid lifters add a whole other set of variables, and time. But NOTHING breathes like a hemi, especially on a cool evening, like adding 50 HP...

Overall, tough choice, but 440 is definetly less headaches...and easier on the wallet.

RE: 440 or 426?

It is quite simple. It depends on what you value more. The best engine or having extra money. The 440 offers more beginning power but the HEMI pounds it later. The 426 HEMI is one beast of an engine in power, but the 440 is right behind it for so much less money. The HEMI costs more but will gain more and more value as it gets older. To some this up, it is like this.

Rich man's muscle engine 426 HEMI

Normal man's muscle engine 440.

RE: 440 or 426?

really, its kind of depressing to know that i will very likely Never have a real hemi, as the prices of numbers matching hemi cars have gotten so out of control...i figure that carlisle is about the same, but at the nationals in the last few years, there were factory hemi e bodies that went for 500,000+...

have a look at this...the sign said "factory hemi car"...who knows whats wrong with this picture, other than the 55,000 price tag?

Factory Hemi? In a station wagon? I don't think so.... it's also got a cross-ram race intake on it.

RE: 440 or 426?

i took the picture because the car was pretty clean...and i wasnt positive that there was NEVER a factory hemi wagon...i know that the "max wedge" cars were offered in wagons...but the 426 hemi didnt find its way into a dodge until the 64 or so for stock eliminator, right? and 66 was the first real regular production hemi cars with the charger?

RE: 440 or 426?

The "Hemi Engine" is a design of internal-combustion engines in which the cylinder head's combustion chamber is of hemispherical form.

The hemispherical combustion chamber design puts the intake/exhaust valves in-line, rather than side-by-side, allowing for better flow of air through the head (although the inlet and exhaust valves are not simultaneously open and there is no continuous flow).

Chrysler introduced a modern Hemi in 2002. This engine is not a true hemispherical head engine; it has a polyspherical combustion chamber, but retains the Hemi's traditional inline perpendicular valves. It is available in two sizes; 5.7 and 6.1 liters. Some versions of the 5.7L, including most 2006 production units, utilize a variable displacement technology called the Multi-Displacement System (MDS) to improve fuel economy. Also, at the 2005 SEMA show, Chrysler unveiled a 505-horsepower 6.4L HEMI which will be available as a racing crate engine and might find its way into production, perhaps with reduced horsepower.

Bottom line are the new Hemi's are not like the Hemi's of old except the inline perpendicular valves. Apparently, the shape of a Hemi combustion causes a lot of excess gases that the EPA has a problem with. But what a great marketing tool because just saying Hemi conjures up in the mind a muscle car that has no equal.

RE: 440 or 426?

You are correct in that the Hemi first was a race only version in '64.... the first street version was made available in '66. There were a handful sold in 4 door sedans in '66 & a couple in '67, but never in a wagon, and none past '67.

RE: 440 or 426?

I have to go with the 440 -

Even though big blocks period are getting crazy, you can still find 440 pieces parts around pretty easy.
Heck, I'm lucky enough to say I've had a few 440's ( only this one in a good car though ) and the one thing
I can say is they have always been stout with little mods.
Set it and forget it 440. If you like the garage and have deep pockets go Hemi. ( not that I have Hemi experience but heard they could be finiky )

I think the MDS technology is going to stay only with the 5.7L engine. I heard that the higher compression and other technology could cause some possible reliability problems. Make no mistake about how I feel about MDS being offered in other versions. As long as it works I'm in favor of it.

RE: 440 or 426?

One for a 440 here, though I'm a little biased. But the 440 beats the HEMI to the legal street limit (60mph). Easier to make hp at less cost, easier to maintain (HEMIS are a pain in the arse to get running right, all the time. 426 HEMI has the shock and awe at car-shows, but for me the 440 is the best allround engine 4bbl or 6. The 440 also weighs a hell of a lot less, which in a way makes up for some of that hp.

You are right about the lower speed acceleration being better on the 440 vs. the 426. It depends on what you value more.

Jeremiah 29:11 03-29-2006 10:37 PM

RE: 440 or 426?

Okay, I will be different. Of the original engines, I will take the high winding 340 because of it high rpms and it is lighter. In the quarter mile,
the performance is close with these engines but the engine weight gives the road handling advantage to the 340.

Motor Trend tested the '70 'Cuda in 340, 440 Six-Pack and Hemi versions. The acceleration results had the 340 car
getting to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, the 440 car scooting there in 5.9 seconds and the Hemi making it in 5.8 seconds.
The quarter-mile flew by in 14.5 seconds at 95 mph for the 340, 14.4 seconds at 100 mph for the 440 and 14 seconds
flat at 102 mph for the Hemi.

Sure it will give me brownie points. LOL.

Actually, I just like lighter engines with torque/high rpm combination. Kinda like the best overall engine.

RE: 440 or 426?

Hey, if we're now throwing all engines into the mix, I'd have to say the 383 OVERALL. Great reliability, beat them to hell & back, good performance, and inexpensive to run & modify.

Also, the 383 road runners, cuda, Chargers, Superbees, etc., are truly who made a great deal of the mopar glory on the street simply because most consumers did not have the $$ for a 440 or a hemi.

So I vote for the Roger Dangerfield of the group...

RE: 440 or 426?

I've talked to several older mopar guys that have told me a good tuned 440 will out do a 426. I've run several 440 an 383's no complaints here. I got fresh 440-6pk on the stand for my '71 challenger, I can't wait to get it in an fire it up. My dad, an old mopar man, says the 6pk with over 1300 cfm's will give me a kick thats hard to hold.

it will also give you a nightmare to tune the carbs properly...ive enver messed with one at all, but i see SO many guys switching from six packs to 4bbl, just for the ease of setting everything up.

RE: 440 or 426?

That's exactly what my cousin is in process of doing on his '73 Challenger. He was running a 340 6-pack setup, and has had perpetual issues with tuning it. He's switching to a single 4 barrel this year to see if it helps.

1 Bad Mirada 04-10-2006 08:32 AM

RE: 440 or 426?

now, guys who have gotten the 6-pack all tuned up run like raped apes, but i have known more people who have had problems...

TeeWJay426 04-10-2006 09:34 AM

RE: 440 or 426?

His ran great under WOT- I drove it, and I'm convinced it would beat a lot of big-blocks. It was downright scary stomping the pedal from a dead stop. It would keep loading up and wouldn't idle worth a damn, though. Can't run 'em wide open all the time!

1 Bad Mirada 04-10-2006 10:27 AM

RE: 440 or 426?

that was exactly the problem that i have seen..they were great once they were all opened up, but from a stop, into a hard launch, it would load up when the secondaries would open...

The 340 was a sleeper. I still have mine, Having been in a 69 charger with a hemi and 69 with the 440 (both pure stock) they could be real close to 60. The hemi needed more tuning to run right. It was also a very heavy motor. I would take the 440.

Man I'll take the 440 anyday!
Although I currently own a "true R/T " with a 383 Magnum... I had a 70 R/T/SE with a 440 in 1972 with less than 40k on the odie... Sure wish I still had her... HINDSIGHT IS 20/20, AIN'T IT!
That baby was solid as a rock... set it & forget it! IT WOULD SCREAM!!!

i cant even imagine selling my stratus (first new car) or my mirada (first car when i turned 16)...i dont know how you guys sold these awesome muscle cars!!

Jeremiah 29:11 09-21-2006 10:21 PM

RE: 440 or 426?

For me, I sold it for several reasons:

1. My new employer gave me a new company car to use. I also didn't have to do the maintenance.

2. I was 21 and I did not have the finances nor resources to fix up a car that was poorly built to begin with.
I hated the torsion bars and the rust I had a difficult time stopping.
Your cars that you kept are of much higher quality and reliability and don't make rattle noises.

3. I had just gotten married and living in an apartment and I just didn't have the room to keep it.

RLSH700 09-21-2006 11:14 PM

RE: 440 or 426?

I wonder if I'm going to keep my first car, the Intrepid. I don't count that Olds because it was a hand-me down and a piece of junk. If I keep it, it's going to need a new paint job. It is showing signs of sun damage already. It has never been keep in a garage. Plus it has been on a college campus for four years and on a high school campus for one year, let alone who ever owned it before me, it had a few dings in it when I bought it.

I've thought about giving it to one of my less fortunate relatives after I'm done with college. I know I will get nothing for it with around 138,000 miles on it.
