1971 Dodge challenger

Why would you need to reset the pinon preload when replacing the drive shaft on a 1971 Dodge challenger?

WOW... now that is a question. I really don't know why. I have replaced the driveshaft on my 71 and did not reset the pinon preload and it seems fine after 22,000 miles. Maybe someone will chime in and give us some insight.

Have you loosened the pinion nut? What type of third member are you using? The part number will be in the left side near the bottom the last three digits will be 741,742,489.The 489 case uses a crush sleeve and if you mess with the pinion nut you should have the preload reset or the gears will normally develope a whine driving down the road.As for needing it reset changing a driveshaft I have never heard of that one and I think someone is trying to take advantage of you.

Agree. As long as you have not undone the pinion nut there is no implications to the pinion in a correct driveshaft swap.
