6.1 vs. 426 Hemi

Two Challengers recently faced off at the Columbus, OH dragway- a 1970 R/T (426) and a 2008 SRT (6.1).

The 1970 got the jump off the line but the 2008 caught it at the top end. The times were:

1970 R/T= 14.2 @99 mph

2008 SRT= 13.45 @105 mph

I believe you but the RT time seems a tad slow doesn't it? I had a 383 that could come close to that...

Wikipedia agrees with you RRunner. They list 383 Magnum as running 14.3@99mph. Wikipedia is lazy research, but please forgive me as I'm working at the same time. Still, real life seldom follows the script, and any number of things could have gone wrong for the R/T to slow it down.

Both times seem a little slow... but with that said, weather and track conditions play a big roll. Also above and below sea level plays into things. So this does give an idea of a comparison between RT and SRT Challenger times;)

Why will no one accept the fact that the new Car is faster then the old car, even though is much heavier.

Because as none other than Steve McQueen said in "The Hunter," "New things are no good. Old things are better." ;)

I am sure some of the old purists are mad that Dodge did not offer an optional luggage rack or the ever popular vinyl roof!!

The luggage rack? Certainly not! But that vinyl top, though, DOES have a certain charm. And my '70 originally DID have a vinyl top. ... ;)

Both would be fine additions to a true to form retro muscle car. ;)

How long has it been since you've seen vinyl tops offred up to the masses...

RE: 6.1 vs. 426 Hemi

The late 60's, early 70's HEMI in almost any Chrysler would run low to mid 13's. This has nothing to do with old school, it's just a fact. My automatic Roadrunner would run high 13's with a stock hi-performance 383 w/ram air, and I know the HEMI was quicker.
