Challenger battery
It's in the trunk, right? While cleaning the car today, I happened to notice that there is no keyhole for the trunk. I got to thinking about what you would have to do to change the battery if the key fob does not work.
1. Remove the emergency key from the base of the fob. 2. Open the driver's side door, since it is the only one with a keyhole. 3. Reach across the car and unlatch the passenger door. 4. Go around the car, open the passenger door and slide the seat forward (remember, the battery is shot, so you could not move the driver's seat forward). 5. Pull the backs of the rear seat down (better do both sides, since this probably will take some room to work in). 6. Assuming you do not have a bunch of stuff in it that you would have to unload from inside the car, crawl part-way into the trunk till you can reach the emergency release on the inside of the trunk. Naturally, it is located right by the trunk latch itself, so it's as far as you could possibly put it from the rear seat. 7. If you are not Snakeboy and can't crawl through the trunk itself, somehow wiggle back out the passenger door. 8. Walk around to the rear of the trunk, lift the mat and lift the covering over the battery to access the failed item. Did I miss anything? Who designs stuff like this???? [:@] |
RE: Challenger battery
Or... you could probably hook a battery charger up to the battery leads under the hood and proceed from there... ;) |
RE: Challenger battery
Yeah. You MIGHT be able to jump-start it and take it to a Dodge dealer and let them do all the work. :D
But what if it doesn't jump start? |
RE: Challenger battery
There is a trunk release on the dash. Once power is applied to the battery terminals under the hood I would just try the trunk release... ;) |

I've been in too many situations in South Texas where you have to suddenly change batteries because here, the heat just suddenly kills them. This is an awfully complicated situation that could have been very easily solved by installing a 59-cent key latch on the trunk. |
RE: Challenger battery
:D:D:D True dat.
|
RE: Challenger battery
Or a new game for the G-kids who can open the trunk first.:D

RE: Challenger battery
You know, I'm really glad I bought a Challenger and learned the secret of the hidden key. I had a rental Charger earlier this year and they neglected to tell me about that little feature. Fortunately, nothing happened that required me to have to somehow get in the car without using the key fob and, say, get the paperwork that had the agency's phone number on it so I could call them and tell them there was something wrong with the car. :D

RE: Challenger battery
If on the SRT8 I know you can fold down the back seat and pull the emergency trunk release.
|
RE: Challenger battery
Yeah...after you go through all the other steps, Paladin. ;)
|
RE: Challenger battery
You could always flip the entire car over, remove the gas tank and cut your way into the battery....
See guys... Thats only a 3 step plan. |
RE: Challenger battery
Saves Roswell the emarrassment of prying the door open with a crowbar too Andre... Good Thinking! :) |
RE: Challenger battery
YUP,
I usta didnt think this good but a book learned me how |
RE: Challenger battery
Doesn't having the battery in the trunk make you feel like you own a "Super Stock" Drag racer from the 60's. Ok, maybe not but it's still cool.....AND the battery is not cooking under the hood from all the heat coming from one hot engine....the HEMI...
|
RE: Challenger battery
I may just be having a senior moment, but I don't remember a trunk release inside the car. Where is it at or is it only on certain models? I have an SRT8.
|
RE: Challenger battery
There's one on the lower part of the dash. Left side of the steering column, if I recall correctly. I've never used it. Also the emergency release is inside the trunk, in case you fall in and the trunk lid slams shut on top of you. ;)
|
RE: Challenger battery
Also make sure you have a copy of your owners manual outside your Challenger.
|
RE: Challenger battery
Sounds like RG has an obsession with the trunk... |

Goverment mandated inside trunk release because children were shutting themselves in trunks while playing..........JB.
|
RE: Challenger battery
I can see it now... you jump out of the trunk and scream... back off or I'll blow you... and he says shut up. Then what did you say.:D

I thought the handle in the truck was to pop the Chutes.... Good thing I never had to crawl back there at high speed and use it!

Fast forward to October 2009...
...SRT8 is in the garage on the right side (can't open the passenger's door) and the battery is totally dead. My battery charger says the battery has a "failed cell" and it won't charge. Dodge Roadside Service responds (dealer requested that I call them) and they are unable to start the car...
Now I am hearing that there have been some battery and/or cable recalls? Dealer says that battery will be replaced under warranty if defective but car needs to be towed/flatbedded into dealership... not going that route in event car is in anyway damaged "pushing" it out of garage and/or onto rollback. Dealer will not give/lend/whatever a battery so that I can install and drive into dealership so tomorrow I will purchase new battery and drive car to dealer. More to follow: Pete |

I've said from Day 1 that the lack of regular key locks for the passenger door and trunk was a bad idea. From anecdotal evidence I've seen and my own experience, I think there indeed may be problems with the Challenger's battery. I had to have my original one replaced in July (at the time, the car had about 2,200 miles on it). The official diagnoses: A "bad cell." Fortunately, the car had been parked outside and I was able to jump-start it off my Mustang without too much trouble. And fortunately, it was replaced under warranty, as a new battery (which apparently is only available at dealerships) is $152. Plus labor, of course, if you get it installed there.
