The dealership closure list is out. Frederick Dodge is one of the 800!

San Antonio's Fiesta Dodge, where I got my Challenger, is also on the list. That's a shame, as I had a very good experience there. However, it also was only a Dodge dealership. No Chrysler and/or Jeep franchise.

Darner Chrysler, Mesa AZ on list: Where they filmed "Used Cars" with Kurt Russell (The evil bother's nice big lot accross the street)

Palmer Dodge, Indianapolis IN on list: Best known as the dealer who drove the Indy pace car
in 1971 (1971 Challenger Convertible) and crashed it on pit road when he hit the photo tower
(Wonder if he had one on display in his showroom?)

*Wonder if being a "Five Star" Dealer saved any of the remaining dealers?

Where can you get complete list of closures ?

My dealer said he did not get the closure letter, but I would love to see an official listing of the unfortunate ones.

Still waiting. Classic in J status and not shipped. :(

My dealer was on the list but actually closed a few weeks ago. I suppose they saw the writing on the wall.

My dealer is on the list. Nearest remaining dealer is 50 miles away.

my dealer is a not one of them on the list...thank god....i feel for all those car people.. especially when i hear some of those dealers are profitable... Obama needs to stop sending so much money out of this country and help these people and get the banks to loosen up with the auto loans.. we have so many customers who want to buy and have good credit but cant get financed this is so unfair for the buyer and the dealers. there are so many other dealers who are not on that list that are holding on by a shoe string. good luck to all of you in these trying times.....Joani

My question is:

What exactly does a dealership cost Mother Mopar? Since the Chrysler Mother Ship doesn’t “own” the dealership, what are they really saving by closing down a dealership? It would seem as if the answer is “nothing”, so why close them down? I have never owned a dealership, but it seems as if they are the ones that invest “their” money in the building, promoting (advertising), running, and updating of their individual businesses.
I can perhaps see a problem with supply of product from the factory should a dealership wish to stay open, but many of the smaller dealerships also sell other brands in addition to Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep. And, I remember a dealer once telling me that his service and parts departments were the real money makers for his dealership. Can’t say I feel sorry for the dealers that tack-on “market-value” mark-ups, but if a customer doesn’t like the way a dealership does business…go down the road to the next dealer. That’s what I did while looking for my ’08 Challenger. I have always felt that if a dealer’s word means so little to them, it will have even less value to you when the chips are down. A lot of people are going to be facing hard times for one reason…”Government Involvement”. We need the market to dictate were the market will go, not the government.

Go to the Unofficial Dodge Challenger Registry and look at the top. Venthos has a link to the dealership list slated for the axe. You can find it here: http://www.dodgechallengerregistry.com/

The answer is probably that there are just too many dealers and none are making the profit they should because of another dealership "just down the road". Less dealerships means more profit for the ones that remain, and that makes for a heathier environment by making their dealerships worth more. It is also easier to control a smaller dealership base in terms of supply, distribution, etc. Just a couple reasons I can think off right of the top.

this is what i heard is that 50% of the dealers sold 90% of Chrysler products sold..how true that was i don't know. we are going to have a interesting year, from i know i believe that we will be seeing more chry dealers drop in the next few months...

Then let the market do it's job, and dealers that are not making a profit or can not change with the market will not survive...survival of the fittest and or those that are best at facing the challenges of today's business world. The Government should not be playing around with the market...that's not good for business...

This article explains why an outstanding dealership, like Frederick Dodge, is on the closure list. They must be owned by Republicans.

I don't agree with having these dealerships shut down either. The truth of the matter is the free market can dictate this. I really hate the dealership that is getting shut down in my area, but speaking objectively they sell a whole lot more than the many other dealerships in my area. I don't buy into the belief that it will allow new ones to enter. This strategy makes about as much sense as deciding to get rid of your dealerships in a foreign country because it is increase your sales. It is madness done by fools who don't have a clue what they are doing. If they want to improve the dealerships, train the sales staff to cater better to the customer and adopt a more customer friendly atmosphere.

BLK 6050 06-19-2009 06:04 AM

I just returned from a road trip in the motorhome and passed a handful of closed Chrysler dealers (and a few GM as well)....a really sad sight to say the least.
What's most sad about it is.....it was totally unnecessary no matter how you look at it.
(Thank you Mr. President...)
