Thanks to both. Yep I am on DF. And Caprice, I once had a Chevy Silverado. 2 reasons I got rid of it. Long story short. Just couldn't afford the payments anymore. 2nd reason, Chevy's sorry powertrain warranty ended at 36,000 miles. I lost 2nd gear in the transmission at 37,000 miles. SO I got the neon I once had. And I had a couple friend with same year vehicle with the same transmission that went out on them as well, One guy had it replaced 3 times in 2 years. They were lucky though, still were in the warrany time.

I thought so. Your welcome. Was it an automatic or manual, TechmanBD?

Auto. it was 2001 the 5.3 ltre. I am not 100% sure but I don't think they offered MTX on the 5.3.

I just look it up and your right. In fact, every top option V8 offered in 1500 models in all brands domestic and foreign don't have a manual option. Why do they do this?

I thought it would be an automatic. No offense Caprice SS, but I have had lots of problems with GM, including their transmissions. Did you flush your transmission fluid when it was suggested?

Yep. I am one of those guys that follows what needs to be done. I like my vehicles to be in tip top shape.

Just wanted to be sure for the sake of my records. I do as well. I have heard of quite a few never GM automatics in trucks busting with low mileage on them. Did they have an explanation for why it broke, TechmanBD?

RE: New to this forum

Nope, like I said the number one reason I got rid of it was because of finances so I traded in before I got it fixed. What would happen is when I drive slow it would shift from 1st to 3rd(actually it would go into 2nd but go to 3rd real quick). But if I were to take off, like on the freeway, it would kick down, the passing gear, then when it reached the rpm limiter it would just sit there. It wouldn't shift back up.

Ouch! I remember those days when I drove an Olds Ciera that had a bad transmission. Boy did that car jerk a lot. So the transmission would skip a gear. When it would just sit there what did you do to get it to move again?

Let up on the gas. Then keep it steady. Not good when you are trying to get to speed on an onramp to the freeway

No offense taken from those who do not favor GM. I've gone through about 3 trannies now in this car but it's really my fault for a couple of reasons. First, the way I drive. I'm on it all the time and love burnin' rubber on the streets. The second reason is because of the buildup of the trans, in particular, the Stage 3+ shift kit. The builder knew I wanted slam bang shifts and instead of adding the 3 washers in the shift kit to achieve this, he instead knew of a TF727 spring that would do the trick even harder. So, as a result my bangin' shifts, though tons of fun, just pounded the trans. One time I grenaded the sun shell so I upgraded that to a reinforced one. The trans is also the reason I've gone through 4 rears too, LOL. The stock rear (7.625") was made for the 265 V8 that came with the car, not the 350 that came in the Impala SS and 350-equipped Caprices (8.5"). Now that I have a stud girdle, it holds up.

The 4L60E is a weak point with any LT1/LS1/LS2 equipped vehicle, as it cannot hold up to the massive torque. Any GM guy worth his salt will tell you that. Some just put in a TH400 and are done with it for good, those take a pounding.

Here's an example of the good 1-2 shift in the Caprice:

1-2 shift

And a standing still burnout in front of the Ford dealership:

1-2-3 shifts, listen

I did like my truck. 01 Silverado's had a good look, but they went and f'd up that IMO. But one of those things that something happens that is a major fix and hear a few others with the similar poblem, then you tend to shy away from them. And byting my tongue if I had any major problems with the 2 dodges I had, then I would go elsewhere as well.

if i may make a quick side note...what did you mean about the V8 1500s, RLSH700? The 2nd gen 360 Rams came with a 5 speed, as do the 3rd gen 4.7L 1500s...

well, im not positive about the 3rd gens with the 4.7, but i thought that a few guys at DF have mtx 3rd gens, and i know they dont have V6s...and ive driven a 2nd gen mtx 360....:)

What I meant is. The 5.7L HEMI does not have a manual option in the 1500, the 5.3L does not have a manual option in the Silverado 1500, the Ford 5.4L does not have a manual option in the F-150, the Titan does not have any manual option, and the TOYota Tundra does not have a manual option for the 4.7L. What I said was every TOP OPTION V8, meaning the highest level V8 option. For example, in the Ram the 5.7L HEMI is the top option and the 4.7L is optional, but not the highest level available with that manufacturer. Are you sure the 360 was in the non-SS/T 1500 models during the 1994-2001 time area? Because my sources claim a 360 only avaible with a manual option in the 2500 and 3500 models. Even if it did, currently it is no longer available and what is currently offered is what I'm refering to. Preformance models don't count.

i wasnt trying to argue..i misunderstood what you said...[8D]

when i worked as a tech, we had a guy bring in a 5.9L ram "work truck", and it was a 5 speed, and that thing got up pretty good!

It's okay, neither was I. I was just trying to better explain my point, that is how I discuss my points. I'm just very long winded in my responses. It's just the way I communicate. If I was are arguing I would be more agressive. I was just trying to give you more examples to help prove what I was saying. Sorry you took it as I was arguing.

mike, it was odd..this was at a state inspection shop in PA, and they had this BEAT work truck with oregon plates on it. They spoke very broken english, and some french, and with my three years of high school french i was able to figure out what (i thought) they were talking about. it just needed tuned up, badly. but how about this...i did a three step system cleaner, cap/rotors, wires, plugs, etc...the bill wasnt huge, but figure, the three step alone runs about 100 bucks...they had another truck with them that had a bunch of newer generators in the back...when they got the bill, they tried to pay in generators!!! my boss and i seriously considered paying their bill (since it was a corporate shop, we couldnt accept bartering) and then taking the generators in exchange, but i didnt need one at the time, and the boss's wife said no...:D
