55 mph Speed Limit?

Just in time for our Challengers, Congress is considering imposing a mandatory 55 mph speed limit!

This will save gas but will be a real bummer for us. [:@]

I am sure it is different for each car model but I read where 60 MPH is the ideal speed in gneral and anything over that the aerodynamics several reduces the MPG.

I had a chance to drive in one of the fast areas in the contry on a trip. On I-10 in West texas, where you can drive 4 hours at 80 MPH and still see nothing but hills and dirt.

This has come up one another "unmentionable" site, and I'll say the same thing here - I just don't see it happening. The world is a very different place since the law was enacted in 1973, plus cars are so much more advanced than they were back then... I'll grant you anything is possible, but the 55 MPH speed limit proved time and time again to be vastly ineffective, an enforceability nightmare and ultimately a collossal failure. Plus I don't think there's any way the people will ever stand for it, the outcry would be enormous (starting with me!)

The 55 MPH speed limit just won't work in rural parts of the country where the distances are vast and farmers and truck drivers traverse those distances all the time.
It add hours of drive time at those slow speeds.

Very true, Jeremiah. But that didn't stop lawmakers from enacting it back in the '70s. And ever since the speed limit was raised, there has been periodic crying from the safety-at-all-costs crowd about how allegedly dangerous it is.

I am for it. 55 is fast enough plus the fatalities will drop.

I say 55 to stay alive.
