GM accepts Dodge Viper challenge

The new 600-horsepower 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 won't keep its king-of-the-hill position for long if General Motors Corp. Vice Chairman Bob Lutz has anything to do with it.

Asked on Thursday during a meeting with analysts whether Chevrolet plans to produce the Corvette Blue Devil, GM's next generation super sports car, to usurp the Viper's newly won pole position in the race for the title of most powerful U.S. sports car, Lutz scoffed.

"As you all know, it is not our policy to discuss future product programs. However ... ," he said to laughter from the audience, "it is very important for Corvette to be the most powerful, most capable, best handling sports car in the United States."

Lutz acknowledged that "a recent competitor" had surpassed the top-level Corvette's horsepower.

"But the Corvette vehicle line executive will not take that lying down," Lutz said.

Chevrolet has a Corvette in development that is known as the Blue Devil, Devil Ray, Stingray or SS depending on whom you talk to, said Bob Gritzinger, senior editor for news at AutoWeek magazine.

"We all know the new Corvette is out there. The car is in development and it's been speculated that it will have about 650 horsepower. ... It's supposed to be here in 2009."

Is the my tool is bigger than yours relevant? What do we expect the outcome of 600+HP engines on the open road provides. Hmmmm... bunches of speeding tickets and more seriously the untrained idiot that has no clue how to handle that much power wrapping the thing around a telephone pole. Worse maybe running me or you over with it. Not to mention the only people that can afford them will be drug dealers or corporate C-level stiffs who take a break from their weekly 700 series commute and take their toupee out trolling for a diversion from a buttoned up lifestyle. (No offense if we have any corporate leeches reading this) [8D]

Give me a car with style and some decent power and A PRICE I CAN AFFORD. I will buy it.

I realize that some gearheads out there are addicted to HP and stay awake at night thinking of ways they can squeak a couple more ponies out of their ride. I exempt them from my tirade 'cause they just can't help it.

Welcome to the second muscle car area. Along with this we get a hp war. Even if I can't afford these models, this causes an increased investment in technology that will be added to other models eventually. HP per buck is going to get cheaper and cheaper as a result of this trend. The people I have seen who own these types of cars are the ones who have successful small businesses. The corporate types normally are statisfied with nothing less than a BMW or Mercedes sports car or a premium supercar like a Ferrari.
