Goat or Chicken: Will 2010 Pontiac be a Firebird or GTO?
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupes, Sports/GTs, Pontiac
We visited this issue in February, when Winding Road speculated Pontiac would get a Camaro spinoff, but now Car and Driver is weighing in. With the imminent return of the Chevy Camaro, many Poncho fans have wondered about a possible return of the screaming chicken, as well. Pontiac's last attempt at reviving a storied model (GTO) met with mixed results. The GTO was supposed to be a slam dunk for Pontiac. Take an existing rear drive muscular platform, add a few Pontiac trim pieces and a GTO badge, and voilą, instant success. Well, it didn't quite go as planned and GTO sales were rather tepid. Not that it wasn't a good car, especially in 6.0 form, but it didn't really set hearts aflutter, especially compared to the wildly successful retro Mustang.

My friend when he was in highschool had a 70 or 72 red firebird. He said it hauled arse. The only problem I would have with that gold one is the T tops. They would have to stay on all the time. the sun is not my friend. I burn at the very gleam of a sun ray. [X(]

The new Camaro platform begs to be covered as a Trans-Am. It actually looks better as a Firebird than a Camaro. And while we are on the subject, can any GM guru tell me what is a C-A-M-A-R-O. I know what a firebird is, I know where LeMans is at, I have even heard what GTO means. But whats a camaro other than a car. What does the word mean... just out of curiosity. Any help?

Though the car's name was contrived with no meaning, GM researchers reportedly found the word in a French dictionary as a slang term for "friend" or "companion." In some automotive periodicals before official release, it was code-named "Panther", however, the project designation for the Camaro was XP-836 and some early GM photos show the final Camaro body labeled "Chaparral".[2] Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers "What is a Camaro?", and they were told it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs".[3] The name conveniently fit Chevrolet's "C" naming structure that included Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette.
