How Fast is too fast?
In the December 2009 issue of Road & Track there is an interesting article about maximum speed on race tracks. What you don't realize is that at speeds over 200 mph, there can be be G forces on a driver as high as 5 Gs. At Texas Motor Speedway, drivers of CHAMP cars hit speeds of 224 mph. Going around the 24 degree bank turns, however, took a toll at this speed and many of the drivers pulled off the track complaining of dizziness.
The article goes on to say that drivers at this speeds of 220 mph or higher would have to wear G-suits, like the ones worn by fighter pilots to avoid dizziness or blacking out. This, however, would not be practical because of the physical wear and tear on the drivers and the safety factor of dozens of cars bunched up at that speed.
