Several years ago when the SHO Tauruses came out, I lived in a suburb of San Antonio. A cop who liked my Challenger used to be patrolling my neighborhood about the time I'd get home, so he'd stop to talk about cars. He was telling me that when his police department got an SHO, some of the cops took it and a Crown Vic up on one of the larger streets about 3 a.m. one morning and ran them. He said the Crown Vic blew the Taurus away. I would have paid good money to see two cop cars street racing.

His police department got a SHO? What generation was it, the first two generations of the relatively good looking Taurus or the final generation "Catfish" SHO with a V8? Was this a police package?

I know there was a police package Taurus but I know it did not feature a Yamaha powered V6 engine, it instead offered the head gasket-blower the 3.8L V6 and that would be a very lame police cruiser with around 150-160 hp. It would have to be that or possibly the V8 SHO because there is no way a stock Crown Vic Police Interceptor could touch a V6 SHO (especially a manual equipped version).

Nice paint work on another Mustang. I do think though that they should revive the SHO to make the new Taurus interesting.

It was one the original Taurus body shells -- the reasonably good looking one. I THINK it was a police package. I seem to recall reading something at the time that Ford was offering a police package SHO. I don't think they went over too well, though, for police use -- the typical front-wheel drive problems on a pursuit vehicle.

Your right that they did offer a police package back then and they were unpopular for the reasons you listed, but I know for a fact it was not a SHO. Your friend might have been mistaken about it or perhaps they really modified that Crown Vic Police Interceptor big time. The first and second generation SHOs were pretty fast for their day and their price tag. The three generation ones were lame but I don't consider those to be a true SHO (although the engine was purchased from Yamaha, it was nothing other than a V8 made from a 2.5L Duratech).
