Torq-Thrust II
Seeing how this will be the first post, I thought I might have something to share here.
When I bought my Challenger one of the attractions was the set of stock style rims that the car came with. The down side was that they were only 14" and about as wide as a bicycle tire, which made traction difficult at times. Not that my car is a race car, but it could easily brak the tires free, even squaking with a hard shift into third. Well I left that set of tires on for about 3 years when I finaly picked up a anil in one of them and even after a plug would still leak a little. Then worse yet ( this is realy stupid ) after doing a brake job I rotated the tires, moving the pluged tire to the rear. Luckily I was near home one evening, did a hard shift from 1st to 2nd, squaked the tires and it pulled the plug out. So, I figured it was time for some new tires. While I was at it wanted a bigger wheel combo too. I first saw the Torq-Thrust II's at a car show the year previous, and just thought they were killer. Here are some before and after pics - tell me what you think! |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
They look sharp but I really love the old ralleye rims. You don't know how bad you're pics are making me want my '73 340 back! Check out the Magnum Force look alike Ralleyes posted in Dodge Challenger discussions by 2007HEMICUDA!

RE: Torq-Thrust II
Yeah, I've seen those in some of the Mopar mags.
I kept the Raylle rims, easy to store them as opposed to selling them and then trying to buy back. |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
While the older wheels are very traditional, I do like the new ones and they really stand out and shine. Great idea on keeping the originals.
I know it's red but it certainly looks like the Pink Panther color. Very, very, nice car! Congratulations on owning an original. |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
as aftermarket rims on muscle cars go, i like that look that you have there..one thing that i HATE is this new trend of MASSIVE new rims on a muscle car....yours looks good..and seeing that the style of rim that you got has been around, it wouldnt surprise me to see a set of rims like that on a challenger back in the 70s...
that being said, i am also a rallye wheel fan. |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
Both look AWESOME! I love the originals, but as you said, the size is the problem. They need to hold wider meats!

RE: Torq-Thrust II
I was just about to buy some of those rims, but I cant decide between the polished or the grey. I will be buying BFG TA's also. My question is, what size tires and rims are you running on your car? What is the backspacing? I was thinking about a 235/60/15 (15x7) on the front, with 265/60/15(15x8) on the rears. I want to make sure my rears dont rub my fender well lips. You're help and advice will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks John |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
im guessing that this is on a challenger?
|
RE: Torq-Thrust II
Yes, sorry, it is on a 71 Challenger. Just want to get an idea of what backspacing is ideal, and also tire size.
Thanks! John |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
if i may, you will likely get more replies on this if you started a new thread about it...:)

RE: Torq-Thrust II
I sure love that OEM wheel look..

ORIGINAL: Cadens 71 I was just about to buy some of those rims, but I cant decide between the polished or the grey. Thanks John After a ton of looking into what size I could max out at, here is what I came up with and what I have. What I have - front 15x7 with 3-3/4" back spacing using 215/65/15 rear 15x8 with 3-3/4" back spacing using 275/60/15 I also came away with the wrong backspacing, the knowledge that I have a friend does NOT understand what I'm telling him and a set of air shocks that will not make it through another season. The rears are very close to fitting. If a friend of mine that I had order these for me had used the correct 4-1/4" rear backspacing, it would have been great. Without air shocks they just rub the fender on big bumps. As far as the fronts, again they just fit with the 65 series ( I'm using the Indy 500's and they come in what they called the half series IE 65's ). I also have read that indeed on a 7 inch rim up front 235/60/15 will fit. I've been toying with the idea of backing off on the width of my rear tire to eliminate he air shocks - in a few words they stink. I hope this helps - let us know how everything goes! |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
Here is also a pic of the rear - as you can see I have good space between the leaf spring and the side of the tire.
More back space would bring this tire closer to the spring and further away from the fender. |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
This car had air shocks to clear these tires. I do remember though that if I raised it too high I remember it starting to tear the metal
where the upper shock mount point was. This was so long ago I can't remember why. |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
BB73,
Looks great, I too love both the Rallye and Torques...good news is you can have both w/ just an air gun's worth of time. I do that occassionally, changes the whole personality of the car, drive it that way for a month or two, then switch. Does cost extra rubber obviously, but worth it |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
BB73CHALLENGER,
Thanks for the info! I understand more about backspacing now after looking at the pic of your car from the rear. So, your front tires are 3 3/4 backspacing and fit well? Or are they the 4 1/4 like the rears? I heard if you go to much backspacing on the fronts, the tires will rub the tie rod end. Thanks again for the info and help! Your car looks great!! John |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
;)BB73CHALLENGER,
IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR RALLY WHEELS YOU CAN SEND THEM OUT TO VINTAGE WHEELS, I BELIEVE THEY WILL SIZE YOUR 14' WHELLS TO ANYTHING YOU WANT. YOU WILL HAVE TO GIVE THEM THE BACK SPACING SIZE AND WHAT WIDTH YOU WANT FOR FRONT AND REAR/ MY BUDDY DID THIS ON HIS 71 CHALLENGER, ALSO HE HAD THEM CROME THE OUT AND BOY DID THEY COME OUT SWEET. HE CONVERTED HIS SLANT SIX TO A 360 ENGINE WITH A DICK LANDY BLOWER 4 SPD 833 TRANS. TALK ABOUT FUN DRIVING THAT CAR. DOT HAVE THE PHONE NUMBER NOW BUT IM SURE YOU CAN FIND IT ON THE WEB 71 CHALLY MOPAR FANATIC |
RE: Torq-Thrust II
