It depends on what kind of tranny do you want and how much you're willing to spend.

The OEM transmissions were:
Auto 727
Manual 904

If you want to spend a little more their are aftermarkets for both types depending if you want a 5 speed manual or an overdrive auto.

I like to have a manual transmission on my car, so I would go with either A904 4speed, or the Keisler 5 speed.

Go with the Kiesler 5-speed;) It can handle the power and help in the highway cruising.

Actually, original trans were:

727 for Automatics (the 904 is auto for small block)

A-833 4spd of which only the 18 spline input shaft was used on 440 & Hemi as opposed to the smaller 23 spline for 383, etc. You can still find 18 spline A 833's but not cheap, but cheaper than Keisler, so it all depends on what you want to do.

Finally, a big question is what rear end gear you're planning to run? If over 3:54 (ie. 3:91 or 4:10) you may want to go w/ the 5 speed for driveability on highway. 3:23, 3:55 or 3:54 in a 4spd is quite liveable.

Good luck

You're right about the A 833. I think I just typed it in to without even thinking about it.

are the transmission labled with vin? I have a 727 from a 70 cuda that was stock with a 440 six pack, is this worth money? how can I tell?

The transmission has code, and numbers on the side of the case just above the pan lip. The value would be to the current owner of that car. You may have the planetary upgrade, but it's just a big block bellhousing on a 727 to anyone else

If one gets the Keisler 5 speed, is this a direct bolt in or is there any modifications needed to be done?

Kiesler sells full kits for big and small block Mopars. If you already have a straight drive then you will buy a partial kit. But the trans is a tremec and will hold alot of horsepower:D The overdrive will be really nice. But a big block torque-flite will bolt up and work well if you need to hit the streets fast;)
