Most of us already know that the 2011 SRT Challenger's 6.4 engine will have MDS and Fiat's Multi-Air Handling technology for improved mileage. MultiAir is an electro-hydraulic valve-timing system that provides dynamic and direct control of air and combustion, cylinder by cylinder and stroke by stroke. With direct control of the air through the intake engine valves without using a throttle plate. instead, the system slots into the cylinder head kind of like a Lego brick.

Now Hyundai has copied Ford's EcoBoost technology for direct fuel injection. This will give their Sonata 4 bangers 200 hp and 22/35 mpg. Direct fuel injection precisely meters gas into the cylinders at the exact time. It replaces the current method of injecting fuel behind the intake valves where it waits for them to open and allows it to mix with oxygen. Direct injection keeps the fuel cooler and times the spray so that fuel burns neither too soon nor too slow.

I wonder how long it will take Chrysler to adopt this high-tech system? It is amazing what the engineers are coming up with in these modern computer-controlled cars.

Note: The Ford Taurus, with EcoBoost (includes dual turbos) will produce 363 hp for its police package. This compares favorably with the 5.7 in the Charger police cars (362 hp). Currently, Ford produces 70% of all police cars, while Dodge produces 18%.
