I believe the Valence on my old Challenger was about $36 when I replaced it.

You will probably get minimal performance increase unless you add some power adders then it will help.

That being said, it will not even sound close to the rumble of a V-8.

Another one of my great projects in high school was putting headers on my old man's inline, 6-cylinder, 200-cid Maverick. With headers and glass packs, a 6 sounds pretty good.

It probably sounded good because of the glass pack and going through a single pipe.

No, it had duals. The first three exhaust-port tubes came together in one collection bucket and the back three came together in another. Hence, two glass packs and two exhaust pipes leading out the side a la the Challenger TA. Very advanced technology for 1972. I got the idea from an article I saw in Motor Trend or something that was titled, "Maverick: Tricks with a Six," and since somebody was selling the headers, I, naturally, had to try it. It didn't do a lot for performance, but the sound was impressive.

Interesting. I too had glass packs and they will make any exhaust sound bad especially when the fiber glass wears and is blown out. It then gets really loud.

As for no performance increase that does not surprise me since going from single to dual does not really move any extra air.

Kinda like getting new headers on a 5.7L, as stock are already good enought unless you move more air via power adders.

It is fun to experiment.

Speaking of loud, the best (or worst) thing I ever had happen was pulling out of a grocery store parking lot with my 70 Challenger (a 318 with single exhaust) and the muffler literally fell off. INSTANT loudness, right in front of a cop car. His light immediately come on. Fortunately, there was a Midas muffler store right down the block, so I pointed to my muffler laying in the parking lot drive way. He followed me down the street and waited till he saw I was talking to someone from the muffler shop.

Sounds like the officer was a little on the picky side.

Had headers on a Nova 350-V8 with cherry bombs bolted directly to the header flange. That was it... no pipe beyond the bombs. It was loud but not as loud as when I unbolted the cherry bombs...

I think this set up would work for the v6 Challenger... but you would have to hang an exhaust tip out the valence just to fill the void...

If you go to youtube they have a 2.7L Charger sounding like a monster truck with some flowmasters .

I bought an old 77 Chevy pick up kinda like that...350 with headers and a short bent pipe with the red Cherry Bombs tips poking out right under the door. Redneck as hell but so fun to drive when you all of 23 years old!
