Black Pro-Stock Challenger to debut at Detroit Autorama this weekend

If you're a Mopar fan and you're in the Detroit area this weekend from March 9-11, you might want to swing by Cobo Hall and check out the Detroit Autorama. Chrysler will be debuting another special version of the Dodge Challenger, this time in a sinister looking black finish. The automaker is also going to have a bunch of other specials including a Hemi-powered Dodge Nitro, the Dodge Venom Concept and lots of SRT models. Also don't forget to check out the finalists for the storied Ridler Award while you're there. The show opens at noon on Friday and 10am on Saturday and Sunday.

I like how even though it is black it has a matching black T/A stripe, matching stripes and decals were options on all the original Challengers and 'cudas but most were made with contrasting colors.

I agree about the scoop being too large. Forgive me, but I don't like black on the Challenger for some reason. I like it on many other cars but not this one for some reason. Plus black, like white, is difficult to keep clean. I prefer more moderate colors personally. Good find though.

Dodge Challenger Super Stock blacks out at Autorama

The boys at Jalopnik just arrived in Detroit for the Autorama show and happened upon the Dodge Challenger Super Stock concept car, the one we mentioned would be at Autorama a few days ago. We saw the same car in Las Vegas for SEMA, although with a different color scheme. To rehash, the Challenger Super Stock has a 392 HEMI crate motor pumping out 525 hp and 510 ft-lbs of tire-melting power. In place of the Ronnie Sox livery, now the S/S is sporting a sinister matte black finish with gloss black highlights. Click the Read link to visit Jalopnik for more pics.

Obviously intended as a dragster, the car's rear suspension was completely redone by the DCX Skunkwerks team. An A999 automatic transmission channels that HEMI power through a classic DANA 60 solid rear axle supported by Mopar "Super Stock" leaf springs. Along with the 15" Goodyear Eagle racing slicks, this setup should reduce wheel hop and significantly improve straight-line performance. If you liked it before, you'll probably love the way it looks now. If you didn't like it before, you probably don't understand it, and we're not sure the black paintjob will help.

Autorama-Lama-Ding-Dong: Dodge Challenger Super Stock Is Back...In Black!

Remember the Challenger Super Stock from SEMA? Yeah, that one. Well, we made an early entrance to Cobo Hall today for Autorama, and happened upon some MoPar sexiness n the form of that same Super-duper Stock concept -- oh yes, it's back, and in matte black with gloss black stripes. Otherwise this Chrysler Skunkwerks-designed Super Stock's the same -- 6.4-liter fuel-injected Hemi utilizes 10.5:1 compression, twin-plug cylinder heads, forged pistons, a forged crankshaft and forged connecting rods to generate 525 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. The SW engineers made significant changes to the LX platform on which both the original Challenger concept and the production car are based to create the Super Stock. Most significant is the absence of the platform's independent rear suspension. That's right, it's got a live axle, complete with -- no joke here -- leaf springs. We're told that's to reduce wheel hop and improve straight-line performance. Topping it all off is a set of Mark Williams axles to improve the durability of that back-ass end. All in all, as you'll see from the gallery, it looks even sexier today than when we saw it back in October.
