RE: Point Man - Week #5
True character is revealed not by what a man does when people are watching but by what he does when nobody is around.
Point Man – Week #5 A Bible study on a man leading his family based on the Steve Farrar book.
Last week we talked about, “if we have any hope of saving our boys we have to save our marriages”. This week we will talk about anorexic men and their bulimic cousins. So what does this lesson have to do with food? Well, in a sense God’s word is food to our spiritual being to strengthen us just like food you eat strengthens our physical body.
The next 2 weeks will be critical because we will be talking about biblical principals that without them you can never be a spiritual leader in your family.
Earlier we talked about how the enemy’s 2 strategies on the war on the family is to:
1. Effectively alienate and sever the relationship between the husband and wife.
2. Effectively alienate and sever the relationship between the father and children.
Here is the 3rd strategy he uses:
3. Effectively sever and alienate a man from the spiritual disciplines that will keep him fit and effective for spiritual battle.
This is where Satan keeps a man from reaching his full potential for Christ. You may go to church every week, on the church board, etc., but if you are not involved in these 2 disciplines your impact will be minimal on your family and minimal on your church.
In short, spiritual activity does not equal spiritual effectiveness.
Thousands of Christian men have spiritual anorexia, and that is why they are ineffective in leading their families. Spiritual anorexia is an aversion to reading the Scriptures. Since God’s word is strength for our spiritual being, then without it we are weak.
Matthew 4:4 “Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God”.
Deuteronomy 32:46-47 he said to them, "Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life.
Most Christian men have several copies of the Bible and bring one to church every week but rarely read it during the week. Many of these men are considered the leaders in the church and yet are spiritually anorexic. The enemy doesn’t mind if you like the Bible just as long as you do not read from it.
Many of us have good intentions of going to the gym to work out our physical bodies, but we come up with all kinds of these excuses: I am too tired, I forgot to bring my clothes, I have too many things to do at work or at home, etc. The same holds true for reading the Bible.
Basically, you need to find a place everyday that is a quiet and intimate place to read the Bible. After all, this is God speaking to you and don’t you want to hear what the Creator of the Universe has to say to you?
The reading of the Scriptures serves several reasons:
1. It reminds us that there is a God who rules the affairs of my life and that He controls our lives and circumstances.
2. Reading the Bible reminds us of what is true. This is that carpenter’s level that we all need in our lives. There is a right and wrong; there are consequences for making wrong choices. I will not repay evil for evil.
John 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
3. Reading the Scripture reinforces my conviction
We live in a society that is constantly trying to chip away at our biblical convictions and reading the word keeps us constant in our convictions. Several of my son’s friends had gone off to college and their belief system has changed because they are going with the crowd and doing things they shouldn’t be doing. I would call that being wishy washy in your faith. We are in a war for our families, and we cannot afford to compromise the di
