I bet the increased performance is more attributable to the 7 speed transmission than anything else. Lower gear ratio's and more gears will do wonders for performance.
The 7-speed would definitely help the acceleration from the old 5-speed unit now found in the LX cars, but the engine's output is independent of number of gear ratios.
