My grandma had an old 80's Caravan that the tranny died on us. $900 the guys that repaired it didn't repair it and we had to take to another shop.

I had a 1990 Dodge Minivan that went into limp mode. This happens when the transmission is going out and is a fail safe mode so you can at least get home at a decent speed. I think the default setting is 2nd gear.
There were going to charge $1200 for the transmission and that is what the van was worth at the time so we replaced it.
