The cheapest in this area that I have seen recently is $3.099 for regular and that is at a gas station that offers this if you include a car wash with your purchase of gas.

I have seen that before in trips we have taken to Colorado. The octane does not need to be as high and the prices are a little better, but as you said the power drops. The only areas that I have ever heard of having 85 octane is areas like the rockies and very high altitude areas. You will find nothing less than 87 octane in most other places for regular, we have 89 octane for plus and depending on the station 91-93 octane for premium.
