NEW YORK CITY — Chrysler is rolling out two new versions of its 2009 Dodge Challenger — the V8-powered Challenger R/T and the V6-equipped Challenger SE — to supplement the range-topping Challenger SRT8.
While the massive 6.1-liter Hemi V8 is reserved for the SRT edition, the Challenger R/T gets a reworked version of the 5.7-liter Hemi, with more muscle and better fuel economy. The new 5.7-liter V8 is being offered with a six-speed manual gearbox and gets a bump to 375 horsepower and 404 pound-feet — good enough to enable the Challenger R/T to gallop from zero to 60 mph in less than 6.0 seconds when running on premium fuel. With a five-speed automatic, the output and torque figures drop to 370 hp and 398 lb-ft, respectively.
In comparison, the SRT8 with the 6.1-liter Hemi makes 425 hp and 420 lb-ft. With the six-speed manual, the SRT8 will make the 0-to-60-mph run in less than 5.0 seconds.
The entry-level Challenger SE gets a high-output 3.5-liter V6 and a four-speed automatic. The engine is rated at 250 hp and 250 lb-ft.
What this means to you: Expect a hefty price premium for the SRT8, which suggests the R/T may be the real bargain. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
