I don't think exercising reasonable caution is exhibiting paranoia, Venthos. And, no, when I got the duplicate titles -- one as recently as 2005 -- I didn't even have to show my driver's license. In fact, one of the duplicates was for my dad's car -- I wasn't even listed on the title. All I had to do was provide the VIN and $15 and voila! A duplicate title was in my hands. Poor practice? Certainly. But that's what happened both times I had to get them. I actually had more trouble (at least as far as showing ID) a couple months ago when I was back in Iowa getting a copy of my birth certificate than I did getting the car titles.
