There's another reason to have a locking cap, and that's to keep people from putting stuff in your tank - sugar for example. But as far as theft goes, if they want your gas they will cut your fuel line.
That is more my reason...but gas runs about $10 a gallon here and without the "inside latch" for the fuel door, a small defense is better than none!
