Default RE: SE performance

The old repair manuals say the 340 had the same HP (275) but the torque was at 340ft lbs for the 340 in 69-70 model years. They sure do run good and ride smooth don't they?...........JB.
Don't be misled by the 275 hp figure of the 1969-1971 Plymouth/Dodge 340. That was a bogus figure to allow the 340 cars to drag race in a more favorable bracket. (max. hp readings were taken at 5,000 rpm instead of 6,000 rpm). NHRA caught onto this and factored the hp to 325 hp. Also, the 'Cudas, Challengers, Dusters, Demons, Swingers, etc. were several hundred pounds lighter, so that had a better hp to weight ratio. They would run almost a full second quicker in the quarter than a Challenger SE.
