RE: $700 Billion Bailout
More to this, here are numbers for 2009 U.S. Federal Budget:
$737 billion for the Department of Health and Human Services, including $408 billion for Medicare and $224 billion for Medicaid
$651 billion for the Department of Defense, including $70 billion in "emergency funding for the Global War on Terror" established.
$95 billion for the Department of Agriculture, including $61 billion for "nutrition assistance programs" like food stamps
$92 billion for the Department of Veterans Affairs, including $44 billion for disability compensation and $39 billion for medical care
$71 billion for the Department of Transportation, including $37 billion for the Federal Highway Administration
$67 billion for the Department of the Treasury, including $11 billion for the Internal Revenue Service
$64 billion for the Department of Education, including $21 billion to support the No Child Left Behind Act
$54 billion for the Department of Labor, including $37 billion for unemployment insurance benefits
$46 billion for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, including $16 billion for tenant rental assistance and $6 billion for public housing
$44 billion for the Department of Homeland Security, including $16 billion for customs and border enforcement
$39 billion for the Department of State, including $5 billion for foreign military financing and $5 billion for AIDS relief
$27 billion for the Department of Justice, including $7 billion for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and $6 billion for the federal prison system
$25 billion for the Department of Energy, including $10 billion for "maintaining the nuclear stockpile and transforming the weapons complex"
$11 billion for the Department of the Interior, including $2 billion for the National Park Service and $2 billion for the Bureau of Indian Affairs
$8 billion for the Department of Commerce, including $4 billion for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and $3 billion for the Bureau of the Census
"Of course, all of these numbers are a drop in the bucket of the national debtthe amount the U.S. government owes to all of its creditors. That figure is just under $10 trillion. So $700 billion represents about 7 percent of the national debt." KnowledgeNews.net
So we as a nation are living beyond our means. Which is normal while at war, but we should keep this in mind.
