I had a bad experience long ago when I ran out of the gas. The Cali HWP, gave me a ticket and then charged me $5 a gallon for 5 gallons of gas and this was 1980. So I have a standing rule 3/4 or more in all my vehicles all the time.
It's also good rule of thumb when you have a young one that likes to drive a car with fuel injection to the big E on the gas gauge....as injectors don't like being run dry....$$$$$
