RE: 318 upgrades...and troubles (update)
The kickdown on the trans is right above the shifting mechenism. So if you have a bind it might be pushing the lever into nuetral. I'd jack it up and put it in drive (without the engine runnig) and then floor the throttle and see if it is binding at the trans. Other than that it sounds like a low fluid problem.
