On the Mustang, they are not holes, just dimples. But I'm just being nitpicky.

There was a hide-away plate that you could manually flip forwarad and slide under the car for the S197 Mustangs but I think the R/Ts chin spoiler would not allow it to work properly. Here is something similar on a different car.
