Post Motor Trend: Pony Car War

In the June 2009 issue of Motor Trend, the magazine road tested a Challenger R/T, Camaro SS, and Ford Mustang GT. According to the magazine, the overall winner was the Camaro.

I guess that they were trying to test models selling for similar prices. I would have liked to see the SRT go up against these cars.

Here are some excerpts from the article:

1st Place: Camaro SS- "Rules the corral in performance and poise, bod a breath of fresh flair, sticker price like finding a Brioni suit at T.J. Maxx."

2nd Place: Mustang GT- "Sensational steering feel and handling bite (courtesy of optional Track Pack), bravura V-8, live axel tamed beyond recognition."

3rd Place: Challenger R/T- "Oozing with classic good looks, broad-shouldered appeal, restful cruiser, but too big and heavy to trot like a pony star."

Here are the specs:

Challenger R/T:

Price- $38,270
HP= 376
Trans- 6 speed manual
Weight- 4,154 lbs.
0-60 mph- 5.1 sec.
1/4 mile- 13.6@104.9
Braking 60-0 mph- 135 ft.
Power to weight- 11.0 lb./hp

Camaro SS:

Price- $30,995
HP= 426
Trans- 6 speed manual
Weight- 3,854 lbs.
0-60 mph- 4.7 sec.
1/4 mile- 13.0@111.0
Braking 60-0 mph- 105 ft.
Power to weight- 9.1 lb./hp

Mustang GT:

Price- $34,330
HP= 315
Trans- 5 speed manual
Weight- 3,572 lbs.
0-60 mph- 4.9 sec.
1/4 mile- 13.5@104.2
Braking 60-0 mph- 135 ft.
Power to weight- 11.3 lb./hp

Also, in the June issue of Car and Driver, this magazine also gushed about the Camaro SS. It said "V-8 makes mincemeat of the competition. Anniliation is not too strong a descriptor when making drag strip comparisons with the Mustang GT and the Challenger R/T."

I have to give the Camaro SS some props. Although I would never buy one, it does gives you more bang per buck.
