SRT8 Teaser: Dodge releases first detail photos of production 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8

Behold the first official photos of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8. The Challenger is without question one of next-year's most anticipated launches, and while we don't get to see the whole car just yet, Dodge has provided a number of detail shots of the SRT8 that lend some insight into the changes made to the production car.

Gone is the cross hair grille overlay that the concept donned, with Dodge opting for a more stripped-down, square-comb look. The SRT-designed five-spoke rims are 20-inchers and less chunky then the concept wheels and Brembo brake calipers are visible behind them. The rim in the photo is shod with 245/45Z R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 rubber.

The car will come with a rear-deck spoiler adorned with the SRT8 badge. The chrome rectangular exhaust tips won't have the split in the middle that the concept's had (photos of the concept are at bottom). It's also safe to assume that the rear light bank setup will be tweaked some. The chrome fuel-filler cap is a neat old-school touch.

Orders for the car began on Monday, with more than 4300 prospective buyers plunking down deposits in just one day -- some 6000 to date. Out of the gate, the Challenger SRT8 is available for order in black, silver and the car's signature HEMI orange with black carbon-fiber look striping. Not surprisingly, more than half of all orders so far have been for the orange-sprayed car.

The initial 2008 model year SRT special edition run, reportedly some 5000 vehicles in all, will be five-speed automatic transmission models with the automaker's 6.1-liter HEMI on board, along with a numbered commemorative dash plaque. Like the other SRT models in the Chrysler stable, the engine will undoubtedly be rated at 425 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. As the 2009 model year ramps up, the SRT8 will also be joined by variants with a V-6 and the 5.7-liter HEMI. A six-speed manual transmission will also eventually become available.

According to a brochure leaked recently onto the Internet, on the inside, the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 will come with sport buckets with a HEMI orange seatback accent, a six-disc CD, MP3 capable sound system with Sirius and a 60/40 split rear bench seat standard. Options include the Chrysler MyGiG system with navigation, a sunroof and uprated tires.

Pricing for the car begins at $37,995, including destination. Tack on a $2100 gas guzzler tax and whatever markup the dealer may try to hijack buyers for and the first customers are looking more at low 40s, but we don't think many will balk.

The Challenger will make its world debut at the Chicago Auto Show next February, with first deliveries expected to begin shortly after in early spring. Production of the full-line of 2009 model year cars should follow fairly quickly after the run of 2008 SRT8s. Stay tuned to Motor Trend as we will have all the latest on the car as soon as we get our grimy paws on one.
