Brutish Challenger cleared for takeoff

With the Chevy Camaro waiting in the wings, Chrysler has upstaged the General by announcing that its Challenger concept will go into production. As the retro muscle car will be built on the 300C’s platform, chances are that the newcomer could be offered in right-hand drive form. In that case, the muscle car might eventually be launched in South Africa!

CARtoday.com reported in May that DaimlerChrysler’s revitalised Dodge brand had been officially launched in South Africa. Dodges (the Caliber, a spacious and uniquely-styled crossover, arrives next month) will be available at selected dealerships alongside the already established Chrysler and Jeep brands.

To read more about the upcoming Caliber range (prices start at R169 900 and go up to R224 900), as well as the expected arrival of the adventurously-styled Nitro SUV and Chrysler 300C-based Charger, read Update in the July issue of CAR – on sale now.

A recent announcement by Chrysler president Tom LaSorda suggests Dodge’s lineup (with products such as the Charger, Nitro, Caliber and perhaps the production version of the Hornet concept) will be headed by a Hemi V8-powered Challenger muscle car by 2008. In doing so, Chrysler will revive a famous oniker from the American marque’s range of early ‘70s high-performance cars.

There were obvious advantages to building the initial Challenger concept, which draw rave reviews at the Detroit Show earlier this year, on the LX platform that underpins the 300C and Dodge Magnum and Charger production cars… Chrysler stands to get even more return on its engineering and tooling investment in the rear-drive LX platform and will have a much simpler path to building the production version, which, like its 300C sibling, will probably be produced for right-hand drive markets too.

"We haven't seen this kind of spontaneous, passionate response to a car since we unveiled the Dodge Viper concept in 1989," LaSorda was quoted as saying, "but it's easy to see what people like about the Dodge Challenger. It's bold, powerful and capable. It's a modern take on one of the most iconic of muscle cars and sets a new standard for pure performance."
