Our current Challengers are actually the fourth generation American car (two different manufacturers) to carry the name "Challenger". Back in the early 60's (1964) Studebaker had a model called the Challenger, and in 1965 even had a model called the "Daytona". And, both looked better than the "second generation" Challenger....
(Just trying to muddy the waters a bit...)
**By the way, there could be other "Challengers" in the very early years of the auto...just couldn't find any...so who knows...

For what it's worth, Bob Fredericks is saying that the B-5 blue cars are to be built in March. The Spring Special SRTs' of the same color will be built then too. He predicts that the bright yellow will be the last Hi Impact color for 2009. He says that three other Hi Impact colors have been chosen for 2010. That is a hopeful sign for Chryslers future. I hope the three colors for 2010 are Sublime Green, Plum Crazy, and Panther Pink.

ORIGINAL: Paladin06

So everything after the first year is not real?
I was making an illustrative point, Paladin. Much like saying the Mitsu Challengers aren't the second generation. ;)

Actually, ours are the fourth generation in direct lineage. There was the Essex Challenger in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Essex eventually got absorbed by Hudson. Hudson eventually became part of AMC. AMC eventually was bought by Chrysler, so there's the direct link. (Because of the Hudson link, Dodge therefore was perfectly within its rights to revive the Hornet name in the 1970s in honor of the "fabulous" Hudson Hornet of the 1950s.)

I don't know of any direct link between Studebaker and Chrysler, unless perhaps Chrysler bought up some of their old factories. [8D]

I actually love the look of the 71 Challengers-I thought the rear end treatment was killer. The Rallye 340 versions of 72up era were very cool albeit not the fire breathin cars that came before, but nonetheless they qualify as REAL challengers IMO. I also dont consider the Mitsu stuff challengers real, just as the totally lame 80's Pontiac Lemans/Chevy Novas etc, they shamefully stuck a name plate on. Nothing will change my mind on that.

Does the ill-fated '86 space shuttle count? The '80's Mitsu was a Challenger by name only. Does it's sisters name, the Plymouth Sapporo translate to english as 'Cuda? '70-'74 were all born of the same platform and although the '70 was the best looking of the originals they are all Challengers. There was a locomotive named Challenger as well. I'm not sure what it ran in the 1/4 mile but it handled like it was on rails.;)

I think the Detonator Yellow Challenger will be awesome. Wouldn't want one for myself but it will be a blast to see on the street.
