that was exactly the problem that i have seen..they were great once they were all opened up, but from a stop, into a hard launch, it would load up when the secondaries would open...

The 340 was a sleeper. I still have mine, Having been in a 69 charger with a hemi and 69 with the 440 (both pure stock) they could be real close to 60. The hemi needed more tuning to run right. It was also a very heavy motor. I would take the 440.

Man I'll take the 440 anyday!
Although I currently own a "true R/T " with a 383 Magnum... I had a 70 R/T/SE with a 440 in 1972 with less than 40k on the odie... Sure wish I still had her... HINDSIGHT IS 20/20, AIN'T IT!
That baby was solid as a rock... set it & forget it! IT WOULD SCREAM!!!

Later...

RE: 440 or 426?

For me, I sold it for several reasons:

1. My new employer gave me a new company car to use. I also didn't have to do the maintenance.

2. I was 21 and I did not have the finances nor resources to fix up a car that was poorly built to begin with.
I hated the torsion bars and the rust I had a difficult time stopping.
Your cars that you kept are of much higher quality and reliability and don't make rattle noises.

3. I had just gotten married and living in an apartment and I just didn't have the room to keep it.

I wonder if I'm going to keep my first car, the Intrepid. I don't count that Olds because it was a hand-me down and a piece of junk. If I keep it, it's going to need a new paint job. It is showing signs of sun damage already. It has never been keep in a garage. Plus it has been on a college campus for four years and on a high school campus for one year, let alone who ever owned it before me, it had a few dings in it when I bought it.

I've thought about giving it to one of my less fortunate relatives after I'm done with college. I know I will get nothing for it with around 138,000 miles on it.
