Anyone have any advise on who makes good fitting performance headers I can buy that would fit a stock '72 Challenger 340 engine?

 

Have you looked at the Hooker Headers offered at Year One?

 

i have hookers for my 340, and i know that they make them for the E bodies.

 

If you want the best headers that will fit with no removing the engine,mounts,suspension ect. go with TTI. These babies use 3/8 thick flanges on the head flange and the exhaust flange, they may require the starter to be removed and the oil filter may need the 90 fitting,( available MoPar Perf.), depending on the size, check it out! www.ttiexhaust.com. I have Hookers on my Dodge 4x4 and they are sufficient but they are rusting badly and will need replaced in a few years, the flanges are paper thin 1/4 inch or close to it! I use ultra seal gaskets and arp fasteners to help there. I ordered my TTIs thru Mancini racing.

 

A good place to look would be Jegs catalog or Summit. I would look at thickness of the metal and if it offers a coating. Such as high temp paint or my preferance Ceramic Coating. The coating will protect the headers after they heat and cool a few times and burn off the cheap coating. Also the ceramic coating will push the heat through your headers and under hood temps will be reduced. A cooler intake charge will increase horsepower and economy. All will fit well just try to get a good deal and a pair that will last a while. They are aggrevating to put on so I like to do it only once. Use locktite on your bolts and go back after they have heated and cooled and retorque. Use a varing degree of torque to snug them down and start from the middle and work your way out. You will want them to seal. They sound awful when they leak. But the performance gain and sound of a smallblock mopar with headers is real cool. I would also go with a 2 1/2 " exhaust system with either flowmasters or dynomax mufflers. They sound baaaaadddd and tell the world this is one bad boy. Hope this helps. The TTI"s will fit the best, followed by Hooker.

But I'm pretty sure you'll have to lift the engine no matter which ones you get.

You only put them on once so I'd go with Summit Racing's headers for $99.

I'm always on a tight budget and I'd rather get a cam, intake and carb with the money I save on headers not buying TTI or Hooker.

If you want coated, they are more.
