'70 challenger western sport special, rare?
hello all,
i'm new to the fourm and new to the mopar world. i recently bought a '66 dodge chager for a restoration project from a local guy and as we were making the deal on the car he told me that he also had a 70 challenger for sale. not coming across to many opportunities to buy a 70 challenger for $500 i couldn't let it go. well i haven't seen the car yet but the guy told me that it has some decals on it that say "western sport special." is this a rare challenger? what did this package include? does this increase the value? i will post some pictures of the car, the vin #, and the trim tag #'s. let me know if anyone know anything about this too.

wow...very interesting!
i would like to know what kind of shape its in for 500 bucks. the WSS is certainly no TA, but its sort of a "rare base model".
the Western sport special was only sold by dealerships in san francisco and LA areas. this is copied from another post of mine, discussing the WSS option, as many people havent heard of it..
production numbers by engine:
145 - 225cid
1,066 - 318cid
381 - 383cid
basically, it was kind of a base model, with a decal set and similar upgrades to the SE models.

option code A91..it was basically a base model with a woodgrain dash inlay, rimblow wheel, remote mirror, a bunch of moldings upgrades such as the sill, belt, splash pan, rear quarter panel decal, different pedals, and bumperettes...it came mostly with the base 318, but it could be applied to any base model challenger, which includes slant six and some 383 cars....ive read in a couple mags about how allegedly they made ONE T/A with a WSS package, but there is nothing to prove that, other than some folks who were lucky enough to be alive back then who claim to have seen one in B5 blue...no one can produce proof, and different mags have argued about this.

RE: '70 challenger western sport special, rare?
ok i finally got the car home this past weekend. body is in better shape than i thought, good title, needs the floors replaced. i did get some numbers off it and here is what i have found. the car is a 70 challenger western sport special built 6/17/70, with all the WSS add ons, but here are a few things that it had that bring up some questions. it did come with factory AC, it is B5 blue (that's right B5 blue), and was produced at the Hamtrack, MI plant. now from what i've read, didn't the WSS cars come from the LA plant??? What are the chances that this thing could be the missing WSS T/A? how would i find this out? it has been sitting in a field for many years. Any thoughts?

JH23G0B382724 and from what i've found there were only 2 documented WSS cars that came from the MI plant.

that vin comes up as a 318 2bbl, but it does say that it was built at Hamtramck.
does it have the fender tag? While the alleged "T/A WSS" was supposed to be B5 blue, it would have still had a 340 vin, which means the 5th digit would have been a J, not a G.
where on the vehicle are the WSS decals?

the decals are on both rear quaters just below the rear windows. i know the 340 6 pack has the j vin code but why would this car come from the michigan plant if it was just going to be a regular WSS? somebody has converted the car to a 4 speed and the hump looks like it might be an origional one. here is the codes off the fender tag top to bottom left to right.

as for the "missing link WSS/TA", articles that i have read (but cant find now) say that is had the decal mounted incorrectly, on the rear wing...i cant find any reason that the car came from MI to be a WSS...id really like to see pictures...how is the condition?

any idea where the build sheet would be located. the car is in pretty good shape, some things have been taken off it over the year but it is pretty solid, need new floors front to back but thats about it. will get some pictures on here tomorrow.

i think that the build sheet would be attatched to the bottom of the drivers seat? maybe its the bottom of the back seat...
