Backup Car?

I was thinking worst case that if the Challenger didnt come with the right options or wasnt what I wanted to pay (due to markup etc...), what other car I would want considering the plentiful choices we have for the '08 - '09 model years.

High end - Lexus ISF
Performance - Evo X

I need somewhat of a back seet for my kids, hence no Vette on the list.

What others cars would guys consider?

I will keep driving my hunk of crap F150 and buy a salvage title Charger or 300C and Frankenstein a Challenger out of it.

RE: Backup Car?

Considering your name why not a 2008 Plum Crazy purple Charger Daytona?

As for me if i cant buy a new Challenger then 71 Cuda or 70 Challenger TA.

Because the Charger is a Butt Ugly Beast.
Not to offend anyone that owns one, but Dodge did not do the cars heritage justice.

Just like Chevy messing up the new Camaro [:'(]

My back-up is a Charger SRT. I doubt if I will need a back-up because I am not buying until 2009.

Nothing... if I were not able to buy the Challenger, I would not buy a car. I don't really need another car and I'm buying the Challenger out of want. The car is so right for me and I said if they were to build one any where close to the original that I would get one. Well they are keeping their part. Now its my turn.

If I can't get a Challenger it will really suck as my lease is up July 08. Last Nov I bought my wife a Solstice and it's a blast to drive, so I'll probably get me a Solstice GXP. It would be the first time I haven't driven a Dodge in over 20 years.

If i cant get a challenger then i am going to keep my piece "o" chit nissan until it dies.

My back up car would be an actual 1971 hemi cuda.
I might just get one of those anyway.

RE: Backup Car?

300c srt8...that would be the most "family friendly" choice...which would be nice seeing as how the challenger is going to be the "family vehicle" in the warm months.

if i dont get something useful like a 300 or a bmw...id like to look into a vette.

Since it seems that I'm waiting 2 years now (somewhere around Spring '09), Ive been eyeing up the NEW Mercedes C63 AMG.
I hope by that time there are no serious problems with the Challenger and we'll probably have an idea on the Cuda cause I realy wanted one.

Damn, I'm never gonna get a new car.
Too many nice choices comming down the road.

I think I found my perfect car! It's the volkswagen R32. It has 2 doors and a hatchback. It has 250 hp and goes from 0 to 60 in about 6 seconds. It also has a lot of luxury and quality and costs only about 30K. This is the perfect car for running around town easily and quickly, easy maneuvering, and for parking in southern california, where parking is often a nightmare, especially for bigger cars. Also it seems to be fairly roomy in the driver's seat. This is the perfect car for me from a totally practical viewpoint. Great for road trips too.

I'll keep driving my ol' Toy P/U in the winter, either the Demon or my Gremlin through the summer (or the SRT6 for trips) and wait patiently until the '09's come out...If they won't make the challenger the way I want it, then I'll just keep saving for a Viper!:)

If it is a real departure form the concept I am going to buy a wrecked Charger SRT and have my car guy build me one that is identical dimensions (including butterflys)...[8D]

Will just keep driving what we have now. Commander for the family vehicle and GT500 for fun stuff. Looking to sell the Solstice as well. That'll give us enough to pay off the Commander and go from three car payments to one.

Awsure, what about chopping the frame to shorten the wheel base, make a two door charger? Maybe w/ suicide rear "mini-doors"?

DSkippy 01-04-2008 04:38 AM

RE: Backup Car?

Backup Car....Subaru WRX STI. Don't know why they haven't made them two door yet, I think it would sell even hotter (less weight, more sports car looking). Anyway..that's it. (for sub 60 ZapX)

RE: Backup Car?

I do not really care for the Charger and really LOVE the lines of the Challenger. No, I would simply do a private build of a "concept copy" I guess. I cannot stand when someone dumbs down perfection and simply hope that does not happen here. Reminds me of what they did to Howard Rourke's buildings in The Fountainhead if you get that reference (hopefully I am not tossing a Dennis Miller example out there that only me & one other person on the planet can relate to).

For me the clean look of this car is tremendous. No chrome splattered all over, no spinning rims or superflous body protrusions. Simple straightforward MUSCLE...yeah. [8D]

RE: Backup Car?

I plan to continue driving my 2 luxurious Infinitis as daily drivers with or without the Challenger - this would keep the Challenger out of the rain, keep it low miles, etc.

I started my mid-life itch a few tears ago with a strong consideration for a new(er) Mustang, but with the announcement of the Challenger, I decided to return as close to my first love (my 71 Cuda w/balanced & blueprinted 440) as realistically can be afforded. The thought of new technology for reliability and the lack of spare workshop or time to build make this decision #1.

My second musclecar choice would be a toss up between the Mustang and the new Camaro - and either would really be a comprimise I'm not very keen on. My brother has a Viper, it's a great/fun car but expensive and requires you to be on the ball all the time - car loves to swap ends.

there is no need for a back up, i'm still drooling to get in my 08 tangerine and drive it home. Currently my daily driver is 07 sport trac, on weekends I drive my 01 4x4 super crew lariat or my wife's 07 accura TL type S, by the way is very fun to drive. It has good power per weight, traction control and paddle shifter and an awesome bose stereo and cost less than the chally.

RE: Backup Car?

While I said the STI Subaru, that was a suggestion for what someone else would get with the same money (I might even get it, at some point but not in 09).

Since the Challenger I want will be available, I will get that. If it weren't, I wouldn't feel compelled to spend a lot of money on any car. I'd drive my commuter car which is a 2005 Hyundai Elantra that I got with 1k miles on it for 10K cash to replace my Subaru Legacy Wagon, which I killed one rainy night going around an entrance ramp with a bit too much bravado. I have put, in the two years I have the Elantra, 60K trouble free miles on and find it to be nice riding and has remarkably good acceleration. I commute over an hour each way and I am 6'3" 265 lbs. I am completely uncrowded in it (I still find this amazing), though when a couple of my equally stout friends go to lunch, gets a bit crowded moving the driver seat up to accomodate, but that's not that bad.

My wife encouraged me to get a Camry or a Sonata, higher end what have you. But my plan before killing the Subaru, was to keep it as my commuter, and buy the Challenger. So I didn't want to raid my savings or end up financing too much of the Challenger. If the Challenger didn't exist or wasn't for purchase, I'd drive the Elantra into the ground and if Chrysler hadn't offered something equally retro and alluring, I would have stayed the course bought most likely an Asian car (preferably one assembled here in America like my Subaru was) pocket the money for retirement or have purchased a Victory Vision. Go figure, I'm content with my bikes and cars, and within the same year they announce plans to be build something attractive enough for me to part with my green. I wish I had enough for both, but College is just around the corner for the kids.

In this case it would most certainly be Mopar or NoCar.

My 2000 Grand Am GT1 is still doing fine at 142,000 miles. I purchased it new in 2000 and cannot believe I have had a car 8 years. It needs to make it to the end of this year, but preferably several more years to serve as the winter / back-up vehicle to the Challenger. In my current living / working situation I do about 18,000 miles per year.

Mustang GT manual... but from what I have seen so far, that is HIGHLY unlikely at this point.

Was thinking about finding a totaled Charger SRT & having a custom shop make me a duplicate of the concept. I wonder what that would cost?

Doubt it would be worth it... besides you'd have a tough time driving that thing... minus an arm and a leg. ;)

RE: Backup Car?

I was thinking it might be costly but I have no clue about that kind of stuff. I really dislike gutter strips, B Pillars, extended bumpers, cheapened headlamps, the production taillights, the black shrouds underneath the front end and sides, and the interior that the spy pics show. Other than that I love it... [8D]

RE: Backup Car?

Other sports cars that I like are Ford GT, the new Corvette ZR1, and Ferraris.

I also need a small, zippy, practical car for just driving around town and getting into small parking spaces.
For that I like the Mitsubishi Evo, Volkswagen R32, and Mini.

For bigger cars for hauling around more stuff & people, I like Subaru wagons and SUV's.
A Dodge Magnum or a Volvo C30 would be nice too.

For hauling boats, ATV's, motorcycles, furniture, etc. a Dodge truck with a hemi engine would be good.
Or a nice Ford truck.

And lastly I'd like a classic car like a Deusenberg.
