Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

The number ONE production Challenger in Hemi Orange sells for $400,000 on the nose at the 08 Barrett Jackson Auction!
What are your thoughts?

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

I've been watching and recording the B J auction all week.

I think the 400,00 is a generous bid for first car and charity. I think it sucks for the winner that Craig Jackson upped the bid on the guy who was pretty much the only bidder. Sad that the Corvette went for a million, but that was over hyped for the charity and Jay Leno, and that the Mustang got lots of time and money too. Challenger was late in the night, and almost did not make on TV before the EST midnight finish

Maybe bodes well for us, as I still contend the SRT 8 (2008's) were ordered up by dealers and not necessarily buyers with money, and that relatively few have gone across ebay for "gouge over sticker" pricing.

As to B J coverage...10 hours live means 7 hours of commercials and 3 hours of cars.

I think the bidding was down because the stock market is down and buyers are coming to their seneses about B J hype. and weird customs and Miami vice race boats are of little interest anyway

I think junk is junk...robo suarus for example.

I think Shelby, Camaro, Chevelle were favored by editors/directors as to what got air time.

I hated that the auctioneers would prolong bidding well past when the bidders were quite finished. Took up way too much time, generated little more money, and was way too much drama where there was none.

I happen to collect Little bird Stuff. I wanted to tape the little birds. Some went through and I taped those. Sadly, even with my B J catalog in hand and watching the cars in order leading up to T bird...they often (not exactly always) cut to commercial during Thunderbird on the block.

Same stupid commercials over and over and over.

I am glad to have seen Challenger and get it on tape. Typical of on stage announcers know nothing, talk like experts...car was rushed.

Steve, I agree with you 100%. I thought B J and "Speed" did a shitty job on the Challenger. I would have liked to have heard what the auction block was saying about the car. You notice they never opened the hood either. If B J would have placed it any later in the sale order we would never have seen it. Do you think Ford had anything to do with that????

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

I think Craig Jackson had to do with it. They get paid a buyer's premium. The higher the price, the higher he gets paid (more or less). As such, they dragged out all the time on the other cars, trying to up the money. BUT

I bet he gets something for showing Challenger on TV or something for the charity opportunity.

As a result, the cars just before...maybe the 5 or 6 just before Challenger got rushed through. He even muttered, one time, "we have to move it along'

So I figure, he get paid or benefited some way to show Challenger and did just the minimum to get by.

I don't think Ford had anything to do with mimimal Challenger air time, as sponsor...as much as I think Chrysler dropped the ball in not being on top of the whole BJ thing...as we have seen with Challenger presentation so far and the Chrysler abandonment of Mopar Muscle heritage.

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

The pres of BJ (sunglasses) slipped up and said no commission on one of the charity cars then retracted it. Thought that was funny. Apparently only 2 or 3 of the charity cars were free of commission.

On the chevys the announcers were all over the engine specs but with one of the 70 cudas they did not even mention the cid!

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

As we all know, the bidding was on the 1st production Challenger- not the concept car. Yet, one of the Barrett-Jackson commentators admired the neon-style tailights and stated that a 6.3 Hemi and an aluminum engine are on the way. Where do they get such misinformation?

where were the dodge celeb's to help promote the new chally, obviously dodge didn't put much effort into it. Do you think because of the unveiling next month?

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

I think that Dodge didn't hype the auction because they did not want to get the public confused between the concept and the production version that is being unveiled on Feb. 6.

Watching Barret-Jackson last night, I was just thinking how great it would be to have enough money to bid hundreds of thousands of dollars on cars as a hobby. Where do all of these millionaires come from? America is a great country, isn't it?

What you think the combined net worth of the bidders was under that tent??

Did you see Jay Leno, who has more cars than Chrysler and GM, drooling over the Corvette ZR-1. I'll bet he buys one next year!

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

Agreed, the coverage for the Challenger was lame at best. Crew was in the pre-stage line looking at a 442 when the auction came up. They continued talking about the 442 over the Challenger presentation as the Challenger was coming to the block. No Dodge representation was there to hype the auction of the Challenger from what I could see. The charity "Not My Kid" gave *VERY WEAK* presentation of thier charity. All in all I felt the auctioning of the Challenger wa handled *VERY POORLY* compared to the presentations for both the GT500KR and the ZR1.

That said... if you look at the facts... all three cars took in approximately *10 times thier retail values* for the production versions. In this respect I think there was equality in the final bid price. HOWEVER, I cannot help but wonder what the Challanger may have ended at if they did give it equal representation and presentation.

I personally think that *DODGE* really dropped the ball on this opportunity to play some hype into the new Challenger. I think the charity *Not My Kid* really dropped the ball in promoting thier charity. I think *B-J* really dropped the ball in thier showing of the Challenger.

Had the presentation of the Challenger lived up to the others, I am almost certain the Challenger would have well surrpassed the others as far as the "10 times retail" factor.

Just my thoughts and observations... Cheers!

The 'Cuda concept sold for $145,000. I thought that was a deal. A true "one of a kind". Damn sharp lookin' car!! I have a good feeling we will see a production 'Cuda if the Challenger does well. It will be offered with two engine choices: 392 & 426 ONLY!!!

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

First of all, it was kind of depressing to sit and watch B J for hours only to see the lot #'s trickle by. And I had high hopes for the Challenger and the Cuda seeing the GR500KR and ZR1 bringing BIG BUCKS. But, it went down hill as soon as the auction started. When they brought the car on stage the camra was zoomed out panning the crowd with the stage in the far backgroung and the TV guys were talking over the car introduction. The B J guys also did not know the diffrences between the proto and production. Also, sense Dodge reps. were there at B J(or at least watching TV), I hope they learned from Chevy and Ford how to showcase an auctioned car for charity.

I think if they used a production car at the aucton, that would have helped the bidding. I know that Dodge did not want to show the production yet. But maybe the auction should have been done after Chicago auto show so they could.

I really hate that this car did not get as much air time as it did Not My Kid needs the help.

i think in the end it was probably done right that isn't the car people will be driving the concept needs to fade away and people like me who think the that they could have done better job with the production car need to forget about the concept and accept the production car for what it is 2 dr rwd V8 muscle car normal people will be able to afford

Ill agree it was too late, too little hype. Was kind of sad but the real race will be in the future when everyone can see the 3 muscle cars side by side. Who will be the winner?
Also im suprised that cuda didnt go for far more, hell if i was their I would have picked it up for that price ;)

Leno, buy a corvette! Hell, they should give him one for all the advertising he did for the ZR-1. If I had a dollar for all the times he said the words "corvette and ZR-1" I could pay for my challenger with cash!!!

All of the (3)auctions for the challenger include tickets to the challenger 500 with Richard & Kyle Petty. Why didn't dodge have them there @ j b, would have seemed quite appropriate to me.

probibly would have been a good idea... but who knows they seemed to have been too bust to care about the auction. Maybe getting ready for Feb

I hope they have a full production picture. Also I want some interior pictures already! That could make or break this car

I think what helped the ZR1 and the GT500KR sell for more money also was the fact that they had strong factory representation and also a real produciton level car was there. With the Challenger, it was just the concept and factory support. I know I would be hesitant as a bidder if I didn't have a chance to look at what I am buying.

Dodge must have been at a different auction. [sm=dontgetit.gif]

Here is an excerpt of its description of the Challenger bidding:

"Bidding opened up at $200,000 and steadily climbed from there. The excitement was phenomenal and the place was electric…the auctioneer rattling off numbers faster than the guy on those old shipping commercials… the bustling crowd craning their necks to see the car- the bidders- the auctioneer, the TV cameras and on air talent running around the car with their cameras and teens from the notMYkid group. Jumping and cheering when the bid reached each new milestone. Crazy fun."

RE: Barrett Jackson 08' Dodge Challenger sells for $400,000!

Watched it while studying. I continued to watch, waiting for the bid on the Challenger. Man it was late and as soon as it went through... I went to bed. ZR-1 625 HP 1 million $$$. General Lee went for over $400,000. New Mustang of some sorts of specialty $450,000. Just goes to show you some people have more money than good sense. But these are your high end car collectors and not really kin to us. WE collect cars when nobody else wants the gas hogs. Then we restore or keep them in good shape until these boys decide they want in on the action. They don't drive them for the most part and treat them as an investment. I don't look at the bottom line, I collect what I like and can afford. Then somebody with money comes along and offers outragous amounts of money for what I and others have been taking good care of. Sorry but BJ auction brings out the worst in me. I watch for the cars, some overdone and some just really well kept. There were some really nice 50's Chry. and Dodges. Well I refuse to let BJ determine what I like in cars and make me less likely to drive and enjoy my cars. I have my cars to drive and thats what I will be doing in them. Hitting the streets and enjoying the whole cruise to work. So bug butts beware, I am on the road and loving every minute of it:D These cars are meant to drive and flex their muscles, so lets do that and let the kids see what beast roamed the streets in the GOOD OL DAYS.

Agreed. I recorded it and they seemed to be having a lot of trouble getting action on this car. I lost count of all the times Craig Jackson said, "this one is way under the money folks". It just seemed like pricing on everything was down this year overall. Also, it probably would have really helped to have a "real" production level car there versus the concept vehicle. I mean, how can you expect people to bid big money when they don't even really know what they are going to get.

Ummm...hate to really disagree but I went on Thursday and watched quite a bit. The car got as much time and attention as most of them. Yes, the Stangs got more play with Carroll there but c'mon! The guy is an ICON and let's face it. We all hope the Challenger knocks Mustang off its perch a bit but they are the Pony car standard bearer.

Yes it was late but this car was one of the 2-3 top vehicles in terms of BJ's pre-show marketing. Based on the #2 car at $175 I think the $400k is a pretty decent number.

BTW - Check the other BJ thread to see who might have pegged that one...haha!

It looked like Craig Jackson won the bid on this to me. Even if he didn't, he helped run up the price way more the car will be worth.
I think they remove the buyer’s fee for charity auctions or give the fee to the charity. 400 K is a lot of money for a single donation and Not My Kid should be thrilled! Maybe Dodge can produce something comparable to the KR Shelby next year and get them some more cash with the actual car at the auction.

Shelby builds the GT500KR, not Ford. It would have to be an aftermarket company, like Mopar, making a Challenger. Shelby and Saleen are just two really popular modders for Mustangs, kinda like Hennessey for the Vipers and Corvettes.

If you look at the auction prices for the Challenger, the ZR1, and the Shelby GT500KR, didnt they all sell at roughly 10 times their MSRP???
