I would love to have carbon fiber components and such but the cost of labor is so high because it is all done by hand. You would think that as long as it has been around that they would have come up with a way of automating it.

I have seen them build Ferrari's with carbon fiber and it is very labor intensive. Kinda of like fiberglass but different.

Manufacturers are beginning to experiment with carbon fiber bodies on high-end production sports cars. The Corvette ZR-1 is all carbon fiber.

Some more info on the ZR1's use of carbon-fiber from an article in the Dallas Morning News today:

"The ZR1's carbon-fiber parts include the roof, hood, front spoiler, front fenders, side rocker panels and a rear spoiler. The carbon-fiber parts reduced the ZR1's weight about 35 pounds from that of a standard Corvette."

Carbon fiber addons are becoming more popular/available. Check here for a few available for current MOPAR's:

The Challenger concept was carbon fiber. I would have loved it if they had kept it that way. I am sure the production version would have weighed significantly less.

That actually worries me, if the concept was all carbon fiber and weighed over 4000lbs then what are the chances of the production car that's not made out of carbon fiber weighing less than the concept?

The body was carbon fiber over an altered Charger chassis by MetalCrafters (that's an oxymoron, isn't it? LOL). I'm sure the modifications made to the "altered" chassis added weight that the production car won't have (welding panels to spec adds weight, compared to one single piece fabricated to spec).
I'm sure the weight was reduced in the streamlining for production. Only Dodge and MetalCrafters know what was changed between the concept and the production fabrication process. I just can't imagine the Challenger being 4" shorter than the Charger and NOT being lighter, if not the same weight as it's bigger brother.

I agree and I am certainly hoping it is lighter. I would love to see it a 3800 lbs but I am sure will be closer to 4000 lbs. The 2008 SRT Automatic Dodge Charger weighs
in at 4160 but the 2008 Automatic Dodge Charger 3.5L V-6 weighs 3800. If you shorten the 2008 Dodge Challenger by 4" it should certainly be lighter than 4160 lbs and then if you make it a manual even lighter again.

Unless you add a subwoofer.

You're going to have "loose fillings" if you turn that up too much!

I also agree that it should be lighter. While invariably CF is lighter than steel, the over all savings in weight, or vice versa come in things such as wheels, ac, sunroof, lack of a spare, engine block size and what it is made of probably have more differnce to the weight than the body. Just my 2cents
