Mustang Fans Getting Scared

i got bored and dicided to check out what the mustang fans had to say about the challenger, most are ready to jump ship and climb into something fast aka the challenger. and the rest are running sacred.:)

They should be scared. A 3 valve per cylinder SOHC is no match for a 2 valve OHV HEMI.

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

well having owned 2 stangs (an 01 GT and my current daily driver 04 Mach 1) my personal view is that up until last year for someone to buy a reasonably priced NEW american sports car your options were pretty much limited to the stang. What else was there honestly the GTO? hah ya right... Corvette was to expensive, and i dont like the look of the charger or magnum personally. Neon Srt? Rice to me..I love mustangs always have and always will, however.... i believe that dodge FINALLY got its act together...i wish i could say the same about chevy (new camaro...yuck) i guess theres always hope for a pontiac firebird..

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

whats wrong with the new GTO? if im not mistaken, and im about 99.9% that im not...an LS2 GTO would make pretty short work of a mach 1...or do you just not like the grand am like styling?

mikeyusaf1983 02-03-2006 06:35 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

actually i believe there about equal in power i remember seeing an article of the two going head to head, no im not a fan of the body, how you can go from somthing so beautiful to what now bares the name GTO is beyond my comprehension...again personal opinion on it, someone over in the design department at GM needs to take a long walk off a short cliff

1 Bad Mirada 02-03-2006 06:45 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

i know someone who is actually a mustang guy, and has several of them, and his 05 LS2 GTO ran something like a 12.85....with an automatic so the missus can drive it...:D

anyway, as "pony cars" go, i would pick the GTO over the stang, mostly due to the way most of the mustang owners conduct themselves, and keep in mind, i run a forum that has over 25,000 memers..i deal with them every day...and i actually know people who were going to buy a stang, but they wanted to do some research first, so they joined several forums, and after seeing how they were, he wont buy one...also, i like that the GTO stands out a bit...

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

The GTO is a great performing car; I think it comes down to an issue of style (think.... Chagnum!!!) If the car can't deliver on the looks of a legendary name, as well as the performance, it just doesn't cut it. That's where the Mustang scored big...... it had the looks to go with the performance. It's also where the GTO fails, (that and the price tag.) Who wants a hot rod Grand Prix clone? I was actually considering a Mustang for a while, but just couldn't bring myself to jump to the Ford camp. Figured I'd pick up another classic Mopar instead, 'cuz DCX had absolutely nothing I was interested in. Then, along comes the Challenger! There is hope for an old school fan like me after all!

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

well i hear you about the way alot of them condct themselves, but im sure its not just mustang owners (have you visited a honda civic forum recently?) i respect everyones opinion and i in no way think the stang is the king of all cars, i wouldnt be here if i thought that, im glad that you preferance is for other cars, what fun would it be if every car on the road was a mustang? not much at all. As i have never raced a GTO i can not either confirm or deny my car is faster, but back to the original post (sorry for going off topic) i believe stang owners are realizing "the grass is greener on the other side" :)

well, like i said, i know quite a few of the members from the mustang board, as well as away from it, and alot of them are actually mopar guys, who had no choice but to go away from mopar, without paying a mint for an older car...

and i dont know what you mean about civic forums..i also run one of them and they are literally the "cleanest", most modest group that i deal with...there are a few who will go on about racing mustangs and beating them with their stock EX, but the other members are quick to call them out..:D

my personal aspect of the whole nameplate rebirth of older cars has been high and low. the GTO is sickly fast (saw some at the track last night) BUT! if a car company brings back an old nameplate, shouldnt it resemble what it's trying to portrey? if dodge brings back the challenger, which i pray every night that they do, then it will be muscule car craze off the chain! i, myself hate fords, but they did sumthin right with the new look on the new mustang, sorry for anyone who disagrees! I don't think the Mustang guys are running from any Dodge. It's true, some can be real assholes and think their car is all that and a bag of chips but the same goes for all the other models not just Mustang guys. I know there are other makers cars that are faster than my Mach, but I liked the retro Mach 1 so much that I bought two of them. Does that mean the Mach is all that and a bag of chips? NO. But I like my cars and will not get rid of one just to have the new Challenger. I'm a Ford guy to the bone and on a Dodge forum. Who cares? I agree with many that the new Camaro is ugly and does not match a retro theme even tho some of the clipped lines from the 69 are evident. Dodge absolutely did it right with the Challenger providing they stick to the concept design. I grew up in the muscle car era when everyone, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, Chevrolet, AMC, Mercury, Pontiac and all the others had their versions of track stars. The new 05 Mustang has done nothing for me personally unless it has the Roush body kit. The GTO although a great idea totally lacks any retro styling. So, without slamming any owners of any of these breeds whether late model or old, enjoy whats coming from Detroit. And the bottom line of track performance regardless of car or horsepower is the drivers ability to get that power to the pavement and thru the traps. For that reason many faster cars get beat by slower models. As previously stated, "I'm a Ford guy," but I would love to own this new Challenger.

well put...i liked what they did with the mach 1 with the hood and stripes, but it seems to me that they maybe could have done a little more to give more of a retro feel...but i honestly dont know what...:D

I agree that Ford could have done more for the Mach but many owners have done that by adding louvers and honeycomb rear panels. Of course the body style isn't really retro except for the real shaker. Some of the interior layout, seats and gage clusters are somewhat retro.

and Palodin06, how was I confusing? Now I'm confused!

Frankly, I believe the majority of people who bought the Mustang over the F-body did it for three reasons. A. the Mustang looked better on the outside, B. the interior on the F-body cars was too 80s, C. a Mustang GT (although slower) offer the amount of HP & TQ the consumer actually wanted. The Mustang had a gradual increase in power. base 190hp & 220tq, GT 260hp & 302ft-lbs of tq, Cobra 320 hp & 317 ft-lbs of tq vs. Firebird/Camaro base 200hp & 225 ft-lbs of tq, Formula/Z28 305-310 hp & 335-340ft-lbs of tq, Trans-Am WS6/SS 320-327 hp & 350ft-lbs of tq. The insurance was lower on the GT and people went with that. Plus the Mustang was more comfortable to ride in as a daily driver.

The Challenger will probably be more comfortable, looks better, has better interior, and I bet will have better acceleration; however, I bet the insurance will be worse unfortuneatly.

I like Mustang because for years, they pushed Camaro. And vice-versa. For years DCX pushed no one in a muscle car. I don't see Camaro/Firebird/Mustang guys running from anyone. Even with less HP, they would also have less weight. And besides, enthusiasts, and certainly those who go to the track, don't leave their cars stock. I'm sure you will find a host of folks waiting for the new Challenger. AT THE TRACK. That's where we'll find who fears what. ;)

I think that initially Dodge will have nothing but V-8's initially, but in years 2,3,4 they will have V-6's and we will all be happy.

That would be like history repeating itself.

The original Challengers had big engines but they got smaller overtime and gas got more expensive.

This news is certainly nothing to sneeze at.

2007 FORD SHELBY GT500 OFFICIALY RATED AT 500 HORSEPOWER

DEARBORN, Mich., May 2 - The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500’s 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque – 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.

“With 500 hp and the Shelby name, this car is an instant legend," said Hau Thai-Tang, director, Advanced Product Creation & SVT programs. "This is the most powerful, most capable Mustang ever."
The Ford Shelby GT500's supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford's experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a "Roots-type" supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.

The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer's latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party. The Shelby GT500's 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

From what I read, and if you go onto ebay, people are bidding over $20,000 to have that order the dealer is alotted to have, then they still have to pay the MSRP price when it comes in. Crazy, just Crazy. I could not imagine having that kind of money.

Jeremiah 29:11 05-02-2006 06:59 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

What about the guy who paid about $1.5M for a 1970 Dodge Challenger?

For that kind of money you could buy 6 Ford GT's, or 5 Porsche Carrera GT's, or 1 Veyron Bugatti.

I have a neighbor who's uncle owns a Ford GT and he pay's $1K a month on insurance.

There is just a whole other level of wealth I cannot fathom.

TechmanBD 05-02-2006 07:42 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

HOLY CRAP. 1K a month? I pay less than that for the mustang gt a year, but yeah I know, the cost of the car. The dealer where I bought my car, said they sold their last GT for about $230,000 That is almost 100,000 above MSRP. They had his trade in sitting in the showroom, a Porsche 911 that the dealer had a used car price at 90,000. They said he had a 6 car garage full and the only reason he traded the porsche was because of not having enough room and wanted teh GT.

1.5 mil for a 70 Challenger. That is crazy too. Could have bought a few of them that needed fixing and fix them up.

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

the price of NICE classics, especially if original, are well over the million dollar mark. there were several cars at the mopar nationals two years ago that sold for around a million dollars. it is completely ridiculous.

the GT500 is a rich mans toy..the mustang people are going on about how it will rule the streets, but with performance similar to that of the viper, and a price tag/mark up that high, im not worried...think about it this way..how many vipers do you see? i may see one a week when its nice out. i hardly ever see them at the track, and some moron who is willing to pay 80grand for a new cobra isnt going to be eager to beat it up. the terminators were no where near that, and i dont see all that many of them...

Jeremiah 29:11 05-03-2006 07:19 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

Well, I kinda agree with the rich man's toy part. The GT500 I am assuming will be around $50K. There are a lot of trucks and SUV's that cost that much.

The Corvette at $70K, Viper at $80K, Porsche at $90K and for sure the Ford GT at $140K are real rich mans cars.

TechmanBD 05-03-2006 08:02 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

Yeah I think it is around 50K MSRP, but the first runs people are going to be paying close to 70k. I think I would rather just get the corvette for that.

Jeremiah 29:11 05-03-2006 10:36 PM

Actually at that price (this will sound strange) I would probably buy a Cayman.

Mostly because for under $100K you cannot find a better handling sports car in the world.

I will probably get a response for that remark.

Hey man, here is a good opportunity for you. Go to your local porsche dealer and tell them you work for Autoforums universe and want to write an article on the handling. Then have a test drive. And have some fun. :D

Jeremiah 29:11 05-04-2006 07:08 PM

RE: Mustang Fans Getting Scared

Well I tested the Boxter and it is great. The 911 because the engine is pushed back farther so you have to punch as you come out of a curve otherwise the weight will make you spin out
if you go fast into the curve. The Boxter is more of a mid-engine and does not that have this problem but it is not as stucturally as rigid as the Cayman because it lacks a roof and the Cayman is a hard top. I have sat in the Cayman but have had a chance to push it's limits. If you read all of the articles they have the handling on the Cayman better than the 911 but not better in performance.

The Road and Track had the Boxter even beating the Ferrari Enzo in the slalom. The Boxter is on handling par with the Lotus Elise but the Elise is brutal and very cramped compared to the Boxter.

Read the older article because it also compares to the older Corvette: http://www.roadandtrack.com/article....rticle_id=1949

The Corvette won the overall award because of price since the Porsche car's are more expensive. Note the Viper was #6 in ranking overall.

Keep in mind that the Cayman is superseding the handling of all of those cars and the performance is not bad....look at the bold letters below from Road and Track.

"Start with the Boxster's already beautifully balanced chassis in a closed-top model. Add more body rigidity and more sporting suspension tuning, and wrap it all up with a higher-output flat-6 engine. Conceptually, this newest Porsche sports car shares the same powertrain/chassis configuration with many of today's topline race cars and high-performance exotics — the mighty Carrera GT included. Will the Cayman S overshadow the venerable 911?

To answer this question, we covered nearly 700 miles in Germany to explore the capabilities of the Cayman S. We visited a racetrack for instrumented testing, drove on twisty roads through the Black Forest and rocketed along empty stretches of the Autobahn for on-road handling and high-speed evaluations.

The Cayman S's 3.4-liter flat-6 is based on the Boxster S's 3.2-liter engine with a 2.0-mm increase in bore. The aluminum cylinder heads are lifted directly from the 911 Carrera, but use the more aggressive-profile camshafts from the Carrera S's 3.8-liter engine. Along with this setup comes Porsche's VarioCam Plus system that optimizes efficiency at idle and maximizes power output at part to full throttle. With the increase in horsepower, the crankshaft needed to be made stiffer by increasing the diameter of its main bearing journals by 3.0 mm. And a stronger aluminum crankcase is fitted that is nearly identical to the one found on the 911. The Cayman S's 3.4-liter flat-6 engine puts out 295 bhp at 6250 rpm and generates 251 lb.-ft. of torque between 4400 and 6000 rpm.

Its 6-speed manual transmission is the same unit found in the Boxster S, but with shorter ratios in 1st and 2nd gears for better low-speed thrust. Triple-cone synchromesh is installed in the first two gears, while the rest are equipped with two. The gearbox is precise and offers short throws, helping the Cayman S to accelerate quickly. On the test track, standing-start acceleration runs with the traction control turned off produce significant axle-tramp, but then it settles quickly. Zero to 60 mph is accomplished in 4.8 seconds, and the quarter-mile mark is reached in 13.3 sec. at a speed of 106.2 mph. Compared with the 911 Carrera, which weighs about 120 lb. more but has 325 bhp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque, the Cayman S is 0.3 sec. slower to 60 mph, and 0.4 sec. off the 911's quarter-mile time while traveling about 2.0 mph slower. This puts the car right smack in the middle between the Boxster S and the 911 Carrera, of course by design."

What is amazing is the latest Target car that every body wants to beat is the Z06 Corvette.

So there are the cars like the:

Accufab Supercharged 2005 Ford GT

Hennessey Venom 1000 Twin-Turbo 2006 Dodge Viper

Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) 2005 Chevrolet Corvette C6 Twin-Turbo 427

Motorsports Technologies Inc. 2005 Pontiac GTO turbocharged H.O. 455

Livernois Motorsports Supercharged 2005 Ford Mustang GT

Look at the car comparisons and find out which one wins. You can see the videos also where they compare them and the issues they had like hooking up
because some had turbo vs superchargers and they were all using stock tire sizes. Speed in the mile were from 170 to 220 MPH, just simply amazing.

Needless to say these cars were very expensive. Take a look: http://www.motortrend.com/features/p...pecifications/
