exactly and there HAS to be a way to stop them
as it really is getting quite irritating

canadiancanuck 02-08-2010 09:30 AM

I agree, the mods are looking into options to resolve this, takes a bit and $$ as well, I noticed a rash of newbies and right away noted they were repeat hackers promoting garbage or spamming pm's.

Excuse my ignorance here. I don't hang out here too much anymore, but am also getting the garbage.

Are these real people or bots getting past the captcha? If they're bots you could replace the captcha with something like this (Sample Below). It drive's 'em nuts. I've done this for a few other forums. The other sites that I do work for were getting close to 100 bot accounts a day. Once I changed to this style of authentication the number dropped to 0. It does require directly editing the forum's code, but worth the effort. If they're real people, the only other thing that can really have an affect is to require an admin approval for new accounts. What a P.I.T.A. that is.

Just my 2¢

canadiancanuck 02-08-2010 10:27 AM

^ yeah I like the these type of filters because it tends to stop the auto logins and it does annoy spammers / bots .

canadiancanuck 02-12-2010 09:58 AM

list updated, if you see any others, pm me, I'll add them to the list, admins can see these easier and get them fixed.

djb0308 02-12-2010 11:22 AM

DGibson 02-12-2010 08:06 PM

had to figure something was up. my last post here was in June 09. How can they tell me I have a virus on my computer with only 4 posts made here and the last one in June of 09. I do weekly virus scans iand my computer is clean

Plus the ones that are sending me this virus wont take a PM back.

rickerda 02-13-2010 04:16 AM

I don't check PM very often, but I now have about 20 messages from these guys. The best thing to do is make sure all the member aware of the problem so no gets tricked into their trap.

canadiancanuck 02-13-2010 06:35 AM

Ok mods sorry we may be thinning the member list a bit, so far that's just the # thru G members gone through,

basically I think the reason why we are getting spammed is these users are leaving an open door for spambots with there links, I'll get through more throughout the day.

Silver R/T 02-13-2010 04:44 PM

I have received about a half dozen of these as well....deleted each one. Truly irritating. I will be happy to forward each new one received so we can nail these miscreants.

DGibson 02-14-2010 06:43 AM

alright ..... all done!!! been through every junior member listing with 0 posts and have found as many of the lowest scummy loser spammers I can, and thank you to our mods/ admins for banning and deleting them. this should drastically cut down on spam mail, and will be easier to track new joiners that are only siging up to solicite their crap.

73sixpack 02-16-2010 07:03 AM

you can add "AdminModerator"

Excellent work canadian, im thinking you should be a moderator if you want the job.
maybe Moderator of New Members since you have a good eye for weeding these SOBs out

canadiancanuck 02-16-2010 12:40 PM

yeah well it helps when you have the software from work to research IP's. It just tells us where the listing IP is from not who owns it and this assists in weeding out hackers on our directory site.

But even if you look any "Junior Member" with 1-3 posts and their "About Me" stat shows Man in the Biography section, you automatically know it's a spambot with hidden ads and links.

are they coming from a common IP address? if so can we block that particular IP from accessing the site?

canadiancanuck 02-17-2010 06:13 AM

no they are pretty random, there have been about a dozen that are from the same IP but that could be an office with multiple computer stations..... but I found 2 more recent joiners so they have been emailed to the admins

DGibson 02-17-2010 03:54 PM

I got 2 more messages today, but they posted yesterday.

canadiancanuck 02-17-2010 04:52 PM

^ pm the user names if you can, just so I can either check them off the ban list or ensure they have been banned.

DGibson 02-18-2010 04:24 AM

these were the 2 I got from the day before yesterday

I am heading out of this forum to a different one. These spam hits are a pain and I'm just not going to be playing around with them anymore. Sorry just not worth the effort...see ya

DGibson 02-20-2010 03:28 PM

Rubieeallenn
Davietorr

Jeremiah 29:11 02-20-2010 04:04 PM

These 2 guys have already been banned.

RareTA 02-21-2010 06:09 AM

The only way I could stop it was going into the User CP and shut down the PM from this forum. Since I did this I have not got hit again. It's sad a person has to go to this step but at lease it stopped for me.

MPH 02-21-2010 07:32 AM

Has anyone looked into this???

http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=208088

It's a plug in that's supposed to check for bots while the user is registering.

I too am tired of opening junk PMs. I also turned off PM in the userCP, at least for now.

DGibson 02-21-2010 01:32 PM

add another to the list....

had 5 today when i get back to work and checked the forum this am
so im going to shut down the forum PM option, also getting tired of it.
it seems we have more spammers than real members joining now.

Silver R/T 02-22-2010 11:31 AM

The non-stop SPAM has caused me to folow suit and shut down messaging and emails. I spent hours over the course of three days re-imaging a laptop due to this type of activity from a social network site (daughter clicked on something unknowingly).

wp23n 02-23-2010 04:56 AM

SWEEEEETTTT shut down the PM option and came to the site this am
and found NO spam. NIIIIIICE.

if it ever gets straightened out let the site know so those of us that turned
of the PM option can turn it back on.

I agree!! turned it off too, no more emails.

Jeremiah 29:11 02-25-2010 08:19 PM

I haven't turned mine off and have not received anything for the last several days.

Maybe all of that banning helped.

We shall see.

canadiancanuck 02-26-2010 06:55 AM

mine's on and I haven't even seen half as many as you guys have.
