Default Radar Detectors

Hope nobody here is OPP....never needed one before, and I certainly don't abuse the speed limit too much, but I'm sure once the car arrives I may want to let it out every once in a while.

Do radar detectors actually work? I've seen lots of ads in C&D and other mags talking about false detections and/or missing radar, and I've also always heard that they are useless because law enforcement is always a step ahead.

Any opinions on there true capabilities?

The only thing I can recall is my mother got one way back in the mid to late 90s. I used it one time and any time you would pass a grocery store or any other place that had automatic opening doors, it would go crazy. Chances are the police have a radar to detect those as well and if you ever are pulled over, they will be more likely to give you a ticket. I've heard that in some states they will take them from you and ticket you if they catch you with one. Another factor is, I think considering what they do for a living, they have a pretty good idea of how to beat the system by being able to block the system from catching on to them until it's too late.

Radar detector has certainly evolved since the '70 days of the fuzzbuster.

While radar detectors certainly work just not in all scenarios. With instant on radar, if they have not used it on the car in front of you then you will never hear that prealert and when he shoots you it will be too late.

Many law enforcement agencies have gone to laser (instant on also) those are very directional and they usually aim at at windshield or front lights and your car which may be a car or two behind will never pick it up.

I have used them in the past but not to purposely speed but to make me a more alert driver especially on long drives.

Be sure they are legal in your state but if you want to get one......a good one to look at but not cheap is the Valentine1 detector which does both laser/radar from front/back and sides.

Remember, never purposely speed and use cruise control as much as you can do you don't accidently speed.

Happy driving!

Default What I know

Back in the the 80's I had a Escort ( the old black box type ) . I hauled rider's to my work place in a 15 passenger Van mostly on interstate drive of 100 mile's round trip. It worked great . So good that one of the guy's that rode with me paid someone to steal it . Someone else told me and I told everyone I knew who had it stolen and not to show up the next day and they didn't . I had it mounted up next to the roof . I put one in a MR-2 and I was so low to the ground it couldn't pick up a signal till I saw the police. I have a friend that is a retired Police in FL. He has one in his truck all the time. Escort has one now that has all the sign post radar's in the country programed into it already . And once it pick's up a signal some place . It remember's the GPS location. And warn's you that you could be coming up on a known radar location by the police . Before picking radar up. I'm thinking of getting one of them . But they aren't cheap. But ticket's aren't either. I don't normally speed . But few drive the speed limit. And if you are running with traffic . Who do you think they are going after the Caddy or a Challenger R/T . I got a ticket in the MR-2 before getting the radar. And was being passed by other's when the trooper pulled out . He stated when I asked why I was getting a ticket with other's passing me . He said because I was driving a little red sports car. Another reason I got a Black Challenger .

Radar detectors are a good investment and will pay for themselves the first time they save your butt from a ticket. Speeding tickets run over $200.00 and a good radar detector is north of $600.00. But shop on E-bay and get a good used one for a 1/3 of the price. I try to stay just 5-7 mph over posted speeds on the interstate. I do 45 in a 45 and 35 in a 35. But when in a 55 mph zone I go a little faster and so on. But radar detectors of today can do alot for you.

That's how I drive as well - no need to speed in residential areas. However, I got 3 tickets in a span of 6 months on Hwy 401, posted limit 100 kmh, doing 130 kmh (62& 80 mph). Generally acceptable by the police to do 120 up here, but each time I was "going with the flow" in my Avalanche. I think I must have been nailed each time by one of the lasers beamed on the big truck.

5 to 8 mph seems to be the tolerance for most states.I'm an over the road truck driver so I see A LOT of speed traps and notice when people get pulled over.My truck is governed at 71mph so in most states I'm just legal, but in the states where the limit is 60-65 I can keep it on the floor and never get bothered. It also depends on traffic and whether or not you're on somebody elses bumper when the cop sees you.If you want to TEST your Challenger just find a road somewhere that you're familiar with and know if and where the cops would be sitting, otherwise just set the cruise kick back with the stereo BLASTING and enjoy the ride.
