What's the down side to ram air induction?

Just curious, and I know someone on this forum has the automotive chops to explain it.

It seems if making more dependable power were as easy as a scoop and plastic shrouding forcing air into the filter and intake, it would be on every car.

There must be a down side to this approach. I don't know what it is, maybe having to pick dead critters from under your hood? Birds, bugs, Cessna's,
