Wait do the R/Ts require premium? Or do you just get a boost if you do use it?
Here is what I understand about the situation. the 5.7L if equipped with the automatic recommends but does not require 89 octane, the manual, however recommends premium. What this means is you will have higher output if you use premium or mid-grade on the respective versions because the knock sensors have to pull things back a bit if you only run 87 octane. I have also heard though that it is not a wise idea in the long term to use 87 in engines that recommend premium or mid-grade. Although the computers are supposed to prevent denotation, computers can make mistakes. I would bite the bullet and just put in what the manufacture recommends.

I think the SRT engine requires premium.

I myself am wondering what the gearing ratio in the 6 speed manual will be.

Do the HEMI's use aluminum heads? If so they can run a higher compression ratio because combustion chamber temps are lower compared to an engine with cast iron heads. This helps with detonation. Even better if the block is aluminum too.

Yes, they have aluminum heads, pretty much every engine has that these days. In fact, cast iron is becoming rare for engine blocks these days. The only problem is aluminum heads are not quiet as durable and abusable as cast iron so there is a degree of trade off.

On the issue of fuel, when I bought my 2000 Mustang with its powerful V-6, the salesman said NOT to use more than regular grade fuel because anything more would screw up the platinum-tipped sparkplugs. Wouldn't a modern, high-performance engine like R/T has ALSO use platinum-tipped sparkplugs? Hence, wouldn't anything other than regular grade gas screw them up too?
I believe that the 6.1 Hemi comes equipped with copper-tipped plugs.
