Honda
Honda is planning an all-new Fit for the fall.

Leave it to New York to put the razzle-dazzle back into the auto show circuit.

The New York International Auto Show, which opened to the public Friday and runs through Sunday, is far superior to the events put on in Detroit and Chicago this year.

Detroit's International Auto Show concentrated overwhelmingly on futuristic "green" concept cars that, sad to say, were far from production-ready. As for cars already in production, there wasn't much to write home about other than Dodge's Ram truck, Ford's F-150 and Cadillac's CTS Coupe. Meanwhile, Chicago's show was just plain boring, except for Dodge's Challenger SRT8 and Chevy's Traverse crossover.

But New York knows how to put on a show with a diverse blend of concept cars, luxury cars, economy cars, "green" cars and plenty others.

The fireworks came courtesy of Hyundai, as it introduced its sleek 2010 Genesis coupes, probably to go on sale in spring of 2009. They are part of a wave of new products to be launched over coming months as Hyundai continues to shoot for domination of the world's auto markets.

The Genesis coupes will be powered by either a 212-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 306-horsepower, 3.8-liter V-6. Both cars come with rear-wheel drive, Brembo (racing) brakes, sport tuned suspensions and two-toned interiors with lots of brushed aluminum.

Volvo dominated in technical significance and safety -- with a good dash of style -- with its all-new XC60, its entry in the premium compact SUV/crossover segment.

With a striking style that combines influences from a popular show car of several years ago, along with trademark design cues associated with Volvo, the XC60 has a new system called "city safety." If the car is about to strike a vehicle in front and the driver does not react, the car automatically applies the brakes.

The system is active in speeds up to 19 mph. Volvo says that if the relative speed difference between two cars is less than 9 mph, the City Safety system can help drivers avoid an accident altogether. Between 9 and 19 mph, the car reduces speed as much as possible to at least lessen impact.

Dodge's Chrysler LLC division continued to wow the auto world with the Challenger, introducing the 370-horsepower, 5.7-liter V-8 powered R/T and the base model SE, powered by a 3.5-liter, 250-horsepower V-6.

Each features trademarks that will be familiar to those who loved the old Challenger, such as emblems, hood scoops and even some available striping accessories that closely resemble stripe packages used on the old model.

Pontiac, which like Dodge, prizes its high-performance sports image, unveiled the G8 GXP sports sedan, powered by a 6.2-liter V-8 engine putting out more than 400 horsepower that is straight out of the Chevy Corvette. It has an adjustable suspension, Brembo brakes, special red and black trim on sports seats and other new bits and pieces.

Pontiac also introduced a G8-based sports truck that has all of the style of the G8 along with plenty of hauling capability in its truck bed.

For Solstice fans, there was an unexpected showing of the all-new coupe version of the popular sports car. The muscular looking coupe has a ducktail spoiler and European flair, with two versions: the base and a GXP high performance model that is powered by a 2.0-liter, 260-horsepower engine.

Nissan's Maxima also is all-new with a muscular front end that is heavily influenced by the long-awaited high performance Nissan GT-R coupe. The current Maxima had been criticized for being bulbous, but the new model, powered by a 3.5-liter, 290-horsepower V-6, is considerably more sleek, with a lo
